The Test

As one has changed one's avatar on the board, to match my cheery disposition on all things Lincoln City, we now have two Dad's Army characters as pics.

Croozey has Captain Mainwaring and I of course have Fraser. A really inspiring character.

It brings me to wonder what Dad's Army character you would associate with and also what is your favourite episode.

Mine is The Test, when the Home Guard play the ARP at cricket.

I particularly like the scene with Godfrey at the end.....and Jones' cricketing appeals as wicket keeper.

Fred Truman makes a guest appearance in that doesn't he?

How is that, How was that. Great episode. Used to be a nice rendition of "Dad's Army, Dad's Army" after the game in the City Vaults after the game (and after Grandstand finished.) The dominoes players used to love us for it. lol.

I would probably be Sergeant Wilson. Not because I am suave and sophisticated (which of course I am) and not because I am any good with the ladies (Not saying anything there) but because I am calm and relaxed, laid back and cheerful just like he is.

Now I can go back to grumbling about being shifted from my JIC seats under threat of a 50% increase to retain them and pondering whether I can be bothered next season.

I think this is rather apt!

It is not on that increase. Not on at all. Feel for you me old. I think Sgt Wilson wouldn't bother either. He'd be just sat down catching some rays.

Hmmm very droll. I think your wandering into a fantasy land there Fraser. Getting far too carried away. Any more of this and I shall be having to change my own Avatar. We can't all be Dads Army characters, we'd be a laughing stock.

I actually think that would be quite amusing. I am wondering who would be the Verger, or Hodges.

The show is almost as old as the horrendous world conflict it is based on. Neither were amusing .Let it go ,the rest of us have .

It's still popular though. Gets about 1 million views a week on BBC 2. Their top rated show is Gardner's World at 2 and 2/3 million viewers.

My late Grandfather loved it. He was a glider pilot and subsequent POW and marched across Europe, due to the Russians advancing from the East.

Before his maroon beret he was in the Home Guard. He said it reminded him of a lot of characters in it, and keeps alive what they actually did for this country.

I'm all for it, both my young kids love it and it is timeless. I do appreciate, however, that not all share my viewpoint. That's absolutely fine and dandy with me. Although, unlike Godfrey's sister, my sister does not make very nice upside down cakes.

Are you more of a 'Love Thy Neighbour' person Oldgaurd? That was an interesting sitcom/study about diversity and integration of the Windrush generation into British Society apparently.
