The Super League Discussion

I read an article over the weekend that Joe Lewis was on the verge of selling Spurs. I cant for the life of me find it now but the article kinda makes sense . It said something along the lines of that Joe felt a sale was required in order to move with the times. What you could read into it is that the potential purchaser has insisted we agree to this Super League in order for Joe to get his asking price and then they get on the cash cow. Its pure greed with money men looking at the $$$$ signs. This really is going to be the billionaires playground.
The consortium that wanted to buy Newcastle has changed tact and are now odds on to buy Inter Milan who happen to be a founding member of the Super League.
This will destroy football as we know it. The Premier League are between a rock and a hard place. If they were to exclude the "big 6" then their brand is significantly less appealing. I bet SKY and BT will immediately look at their contracts if these teams were excluded and would want a piece of the Super League. The Southamptons, Burnleys etc will all lose out in TV revenue as SKY and BT wont want to invest billions in a lesser product.
These will be midweek games and you can bet your bottom dollar that they wont all be on the same night so TV companies can get as much exposure as possible. I cant see how this can run in conjunction with the Premier League or the other leagues to be honest.
Which competition would to take priorty if there was fixture clash due to postponements?
Its a dark day.

Just another example of this world when the rich just keep getting richer and the poorer keep getting poorer.

ENIC really don't deserve this. They have won nothing in 20 years of running a football club.

Well a line is being drawn and I don't mean between the Premier league and the super league.

Spurs will lose plenty of fans here. Not like it matters now with the new money coming in.

Sorry, you were right Nick. It is £300m, not £3billion. The SSN guy had made it sound like £3b.

I know it's still a large amount of money, but £300m makes this move seem even riskier.

Cake and eat it...they still want to play in their domestic leagues/competitions but on Wednesdays they want to play in the one that matters. I would expell them from all other competitions and if the fans reject them then no matter what money s thrown at it, it will fail, but knowing some fans they will embrace it because human nature being what it is, and new generations of fans, then us old school will die as we dont have an Ark,,,,,inevitable but I stick by my guns and will not support my team any more if it goes ahead. So will not be posting on this site anymore (hoorah you all shout) as it will still be affiliated to the new super dooper spurs in the sooper dooper league.

To be honest I cannot fathom how they came to pick Spurs as part of the elite...ha ha

Wonder what the other teams in the PL who have been snubbed but feel they are toppers will think. And why would they want to be given the privelige of getting promoted(invited?) to the Elite Wednesday night affair when they know the founding members cannot be relegated out of it....how is that a competition?

It is purely finance and money.....they can do one Cricket and Golf and Snooker and Horse Racing and Athletics etc will be my choice and for Football I have to work out which team has values I can believe in and hence start supporting them.

My initial reaction was entirely against it, but I've discussed it and thought about t most of last night.

For me, as a new competition per se, it's clear it could well save Tottenham from a financial implosion, and viewed in this light, I think Levy and the board really had no choice but to get on board.

By principle, I hate the idea of a most elite league that is protected against outside competition., it really is franchise football by another name.

Can you imagine the spectre of us being a midtable mediocre PL team and finishing last in the new super-league - we'll be utterly and deservedly ridiculed.

This is all going to come down to the players now i.e. what the authorities might do to them and what they'll get out of it - as they'll have every right to demand vast increases in salaries/fees.

At the same time, I have great sympathy for saying it serves UEFA right for the years of corruption and mismanagement.

This morning the PL, UEFA and FIFA will have some momentous decisions to make, I'm told, with FIFA an overarching accommodation has already been agreed in principle.

This one is going to run and run.

With the Arsenal owner as joint VC, no chance. It would very quickly become the most corrupt union in sport with the super wealthy only interested in becoming even more wealthy.

Am I right in saying forming this competition would also evade any future FFP rulings?

It's bigger than FFP. It undermines the entire governance model of football. Who's to say that the Super League don't start adapting the rules and going against IFAB? Who's to say that they won't start allowing mid-season transfers? Perhaps they'll start bringing on specialist free-kick takers and then putting them back on the bench. Anything could happen once the power base shifts.

They're apparently going to have their own financial rules, all of which will be designed to keep them liquid.

I think from talking to various people in all levels of football last night and this morning, the clubs are saying 'we had to act' - the new 'swiss style' league was a farce and we're all so far in the financial mire we had to act, or the effects of coivd would have us all on a financial edge for a decade...

What will make or break this league, will be the fans; how far will they hands into their pockets ?

On the one hand it could be argued it devalues PL season tickets, on the other will clubs put up or lower prices - I'm pretty sure I know what we'll do.

Will you pay?

If fans don't go and it's playing to empty terraces, the competition will be as good as dead ...

I was not against it from the off. But I need to know the consequences. Our financial situation may have forced Levy as you say. The 300 mil is very nice but beyond that I don't know what the potential rewards will be.
This is a bit like Brexit. A lot of posturing and threats but ultimately too much to lose so a compromise maybe.

If this is a simply a new competition that a broadcaster such as Amazon is funding - fair enough.
We all know it's more than that.
Much more.
This is the creation of a new tier of football. A Franchise model to be sold in the digital age.
In two years time we will be playing Juve in Tokyo on a Saturday evening.
Frankly, I am astonished that we got invited to the party.
Fair play to Levy. This achievement might even eclipse the new stadium.

Well if the PL decides to take action, we'll lose around £125 - 140 mill from their payments, so that could be 50% of the benefit gone.

Exclude domestic cup payments and ALL tickets sales and that's a minimum of £150 mill, that would also be lost.

So net benefit to club at that stage is zero; of course New super league tickets sales may well easily replace PL tickets sales, but that cannot be more than £100 mill.

So if we are thrown out of all domestic competitions, then we're almost right back where we started, from a financial viewpoint.

I wonder if having Jose as our manager elevated us into the 6 ?

Football has become a monster and as moved so far to the right and big business from its humble beginnings where it gave hope and a bit of pleasure to the working class masses on a Saturday after a weeks hard graft (if they had a job). It was the peoples sport and now it is the billionaires sport. Feck em. And yes EX all the asssociations and entities controlling football in whatever guise are corrupt cos thats what money does....and no one ever brings them to account.

The £300m isn't even guaranteed. It ranges from £310m down to £89m per club. I would imagine we'll be near the lower end of the scale.

I've been reading that the three additional founding member clubs have still to be announced but the three obvious candidates - Bayern, Dortmund and PSG - have ruled themselves out. I'm surprised at PSG. I thought this would have been right up their street.
