The Science and Technology Thread

I do love Brian Cox.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again - if you don't think Apollo 11 landed on Moon you are a colossal nob end & should get a new brain"

Another reason for not touching an iPhone, if any were needed.

Apple has confirmed the suspicions of many iPhone owners by revealing it does deliberately slow down some models of the iPhone as they age.

Nearly all computers worldwide - and many other devices - have been exposed to security flaws which leave them vulnerable to attacks by hackers.

Researchers discovered gaps in security stemming from central processing units - better known as the chip or microchip - which could allow privately stored data in computers and networks to be hacked.

Nothing is safe in reality, is it? Apparently, this has been known about by the tech industry for months, but now it's been made public, who knows what will happen?

Not sure if this is exactly 'Science & Technology' but didn't really need a fresh thread for it:

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook up the San Francisco Bay Area early Thursday.

It was felt throughout the region, and could be felt for perhaps five to 10 seconds. Near the San Francisco International Airport, several jolts could be felt.

The earthquake was centered along the Oakland-Berkeley border, just north of the Claremont Hotel. The epicenter of the earthquake is in the area of the Hayward fault, one of the most feared in the Bay Area, which could produce a magnitude 7 or greater earthquake and is directly underneath heavily populated areas.

Could this be the prelude to the 'Big One' which all Californians fear is due to happen? Could be horrendous - worrying times :23:

South Africa's Cape Town, one of the world's iconic tourist destinations, could run out of water by April as the city's worst drought in a century risks forcing residents to join queues for emergency rations.

"Day Zero" - the date taps are due to run dry - has crept forward to April 22 as city authorities race to build desalination plants and drill underground boreholes.

Wow. Unbelievable...

Stephen Jay Hawkings - 22/11/2017 19:02

Yeah, and his most likely death!!

Another thing is, haven't these people ever seen the moon? Or any other planet in our solar system? There's kind of a pattern. They can easily see any of them with a good telescope.

Why would one planet out of the observable universe be disc shaped?

They're proper mental.

I think Neil DeGrasse Tyson put this out there too.

This isnt it but it is bloody good, as he likes to say 'Science doesnt care what you believe'.

The guy played by Christian Bale in The Big Short is putting most of his money in water now. Maybe we should all be doing the same?

Is this for real? It seems too good to be true.

It seems to be US only, BBJ. SOme have tried it over here, without success.

Such a shame. I need something portable, just like this. The Amazon Fire Stick with Kodi is still my best option.

Thanks, Heath.

Yournewswire is at it again, but this time, it's killing people. When will people realise they're just part of Russia's "Internet research agency" i.e. a bunch of trolls.

http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/a-lifethreatening-piece-of-fake-news-has-gone-viral-on-facebook-please-stop-sharing-it/

The piece, from yournewswire, claims that the flu shot causes flu outbreaks and that many people are dying as a result.

“We have seen people dying across the country of the flu, and one thing nearly all of them have in common is they got the flu shot," an anonymous doctor (who doesn't exist) from the CDC told yournewswire, even though they really didn't.

Of course, it's complete nonsense. Flu shots do not contain any active virus.

"The viruses in the flu shot are killed (inactivated), so you cannot get the flu from a flu shot," the actual Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explain on their official website.

Cheddar Man: DNA shows early Briton had dark skin

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-42939192

Bet Briton First are delighted.

This really could be one of those moments in life that change everything.

Nuclear power is currently powered by Fission, which leaves nuclear waste that must be disposed of. Fusion has none of these problems, but to date more energy has been input than you get out. Fusion creates more heat than any known substance can contain without melting, so the matter has to be held between large magnets, that require immense power.

Well, MIT claim to have solved the problem. They have created very small magnets from a new superconductor.

It is estimated it will be up and running in 15 years. Unlimited, clean energy is just around the corner!!!!

It's huge news, that could save us and the planet. However, whether we need a 1p coin is obviously far more important, watching the news today.

Maybe the death of one of out best posters, Stephen Hawkings, will create a surge in interest for science.

I found this interesting.

Scott Kelly spent 340 days in the International Space Station. On his return to earth, after tests NASA found his genes had changed and his DNA was no longer the same as his identical brother.

Just been reading his life story. Started as a kid with attention difficulties, and went to space.

Great guy (and he says the Earth is a sphere, in case any flat earthers are reading).

It's a shame the whole DNA story is a bit fake newsy. There were some changes in the expression of the genes, that did not return to normal, but that's not the same as genes changing.

I know we have a few here that have experienced Autism first hand. What do you think about this? It's not a permanent cure, so do you just accept your child for who they are, or is this a massive breakthrough?

https://www.spring.org.uk/2018/03/autism-reversed.php

A drug used to treat cancer could reverse the symptoms of autism in three days, new research finds.

“We have discovered a small molecule compound that shows a profound and prolonged effect on autism-like social deficits without obvious side effects, while many currently used compounds for treating a variety of psychiatric diseases have failed to exhibit the therapeutic efficacy for this core symptom of autism.”

No wonder Trump supporters are struggling with there science. This is an actual science story on one of their favourite sites. I am not making this up. He actually wrote this, and they published it.

http://dailycaller.com/2018/03/23/deceptive-language-ruins-earth-hour/

With Earth Hour being held around the world between 8:30 and 9:30 pm local time on Saturday, we are going to hear a lot about reducing “carbon pollution,” “carbon emissions,” and our supposed “carbon footprint.”

But this makes no sense.

And increasing CO2 levels pose no direct hazard to human health. CO2 concentrations in submarines can reach levels above 10,000 ppm, 25 times current atmospheric levels, with no harmful effects on the crew.
