The Science and Technology Thread

I'd say trick of the eye, as I can also see somebody doing a spiderman impression over on the left and crawling down.

I don't really know much about self-driving cars, what's the story with drink driving then?

I assume you can drive down to the local, knock back 12 pints, jump back in your car and away home with ye?

Or does there still have to be some modicum of responsibility?

What most of the self-driving car companies are working towards is more like self driving taxis. Uber and the likes are in on the game. The idea is that they own the cars and you hire them. It's probably a very efficient business model. There would be no need for car parks if it took off.

Not an "alien alert!" but an interesting picture from Mars.

Tree or plant life? Or a glitch?

Looks like a fissure in the ground to me.

Interesting read here. For some reason, made me think of Heath and Sas...

https://qz.com/1124046/why-millions-of-americans-believe-things-that-arent-true/

Our study focuses on something else that shapes beliefs: We looked at what matters the most to people when they’re deciding what’s true. We found that having faith in your intuition about the facts does make you more likely to endorse conspiracy theories. However, it doesn’t really influence your beliefs about science, such as vaccine safety or climate change. In contrast, someone who says beliefs must be supported with data is more likely both to reject conspiracy theories and to answer questions about mainstream science and political issues more accurately.

Astronomers have found a cool, Earth-sized planet that's relatively close to our Solar System.

The properties of this newly discovered planet - called Ross 128 b - make it a prime target in the search for life elsewhere in the cosmos. At just 11 light-years away, it's the second closest exoplanet of its kind to Earth. But the closest one, known as Proxima b, looks to be less hospitable for life.

This guy is going to launch himself in a 500mph homemade rocket to prove the earth is flat :3:

Good luck with that mate.

oops didn't see that.

Said I'd post it here because it's a "scientific experiment" lol.

Flat earthers fascinate me to be honest, they're a law unto themselves.

It is an odd one. This guy says he doesn't believe in science, but he's using it to build a rocket.

NASA release all their images as RAW files. These can't be faked, unlike jpegs. If he wants to see the curvature of the Earth, then he can just save himself an awful lot of time!!!!!

Yeah, and his most likely death!!

Another thing is, haven't these people ever seen the moon? Or any other planet in our solar system? There's kind of a pattern. They can easily see any of them with a good telescope.

Why would one planet out of the observable universe be disc shaped?

They're proper mental.

I'd offer to be clean up crew but I might be making a mess of my own laughing.

The mad flat Earther has had to put his experiment on hold as he doesn't have the requisite federal permits to launch his mission :3:

The United States Bureau of Land Management "told me they would not allow me to do the event ... at least not at that location," Hughes said in a YouTube announcement, amid international attention over his plans to launch into the 'atmosflat.'

"It's been very disappointing," he said.

The world's largest lithium ion battery has begun dispensing power into an electricity grid in South Australia.

The 100-megawatt battery, built by Tesla, was officially activated on Friday. It had in fact provided some power since Thursday due to demand caused by local hot weather.

South Australia has been crippled by electricity problems in recent times.

Tesla boss Elon Musk famously vowed to build the battery within 100 days - a promise that was fulfilled.

Amazing guy, isn't he? Whether all this is truly the answer, time will tell, but at least he's trying.

I keep seeing articles on his Boring Company, and wonder why it's news that his company is boring? It takes me a minute, each time, to figure it out.

Solar roofs, practical electric cars, enormous batteries to make it possible to use renewable energy exclusively, the guy is a superhero. He is the fight against climate change all by himself.

I suspect that Tesla won't be around in ten years and quite a few of these enterprises will become case studies in failed businesses but that's not the point, is it?

No, not the point, and he'll be the first to admit it. He doesn't care about the money.

My only concern is whether electric is the future. With more and more renewable (the true free energy!!) it becomes more practical, but I can't wait to see how other technologies evolve. It still has it's drawbacks, though, like charging times.

Toyota opened a massive new Hydrogen plant this week, and they have plans to create hydrogen on site, at fueling stations. Then again, if Fisher's battery, that can charge in 1 minute, works out, then it's game on!!!!

Exciting times.
