The Royals and Prince Phillips

Yes I do mean that lot in Buckingham Palace and surrounding area's! Ha! So Phillip has decided to stand down cos he can't stand up he joked!

Good on you. I think it's time for you to enjoy some retirement. I expect The Queen will gradually do less too.

Been a roller coaster life for them which seen them oversee some very turbulent times and threaten to bring the monarchy down.

So are you a royalist, or not: what are your thoughts on their life and times? Who do you have time for and who not?

Bit of a tough one for me KK. I am as republican as they come (not in the Trump sense, you understand) but I do appreciate the value to the UK, in terms of prestige and the economy that having a popular, high-profile Royal family might bring.

But I think it's outrageous that these people live in such lavish luxury by simple dint of birth. I am unconvinced the value they bring to the UK outweighs the cost, and it's all very well to point to the Queen's individual, private wealth (and the private wealth of the others come to that) but how did they acquire it in the first place? Why, they were born with it!!

Anyway, all that aside, I take my hat off to them in terms of their 'workload' and having to meet, greet and make small talk with the great unwashed on a near-daily basis, and having to glad-hand idiots like Trump.

I don't mind the likes of William & Kate and Harry - the younger, modern Royals who certainly seem more in touch with real life than some of the others.

I just can't accept the huge cost and levels of luxury involved when there is so much inequality in this country and the world in general.

:111:

As I've intimated elsewhere, I think he might be keeping his head down so that in the aftermath of Brexit, he'll be less likely to be shipped back to Greece.
I think Her Majesty in particular had given good value for money to the nation over the years but most of the rest of the Royals should surely be able to go out to work rather than lounge around in their various castles, palaces and mansions?

I've resolved that they bring more people pleasure and in higher amounts than the displeasure they bring to those who don't really like the system.

That's been compounded since london mayor elections (now coming to Brum and other cities) and the likes of Farage, Johnson and Trump etc representing.

I am not convinced Prince Phillip has represented us well. I concede, the Queen has just purely based on what I've said above... and I do think that, as I posted a fair while back, the younger royals could well reform it and make a very useful contribution to society and to the world and our (Britain's) image in the world.

It does need the likes of Harry and Will to continue doing what they are doing to make it valid.

I do struggle that there are homeless in the capital (or anywhere) with so much wealth at the top of our society though. I know at times I've given my last penny to a good cause or tried to help with what little I have. I don't get in this day and age why those with so much don't make sure those with nothing have the bear essentials.. a roof over there heads.

I'd still scrap hereditary lords from the house of lords though, along with the priest etc.

I am with JPA. Apparently Prince Charles has a flunky to squeeze the toothpaste on to his toothbrush , I mean come on why on earth does he need a servant to do that , just ridiculous.

I am not surprised that Prince Pip is still going strong at 95 he has had a life of the most extraordinary priveledge and care and had the best of everything , and a lot of it has been funded by us the taxpayer.

It will be fascinating what direction it all takes when the Queen does abdicate/pass.

I am ok with them.

Yes there is a need to modernise. But i think the country would lose some of its identity if they were to go. I am into history so like that part of it aswell. We definately do the pageant side of things better than anyone else and some countries (thats you USA) are pretty envious of it all. So thats a plus!..

Actually the Danes do a very nice Changing of The Guard and their Queen has four palaces in the same square.

I personally think the only reason the monarchy has survived is down to Diana's sons. The public truly to took them to their hearts after there Mom's death.

As much as anyone can given there position they have helped to ''normalise'' the monarchy and bring them down to earth.

Prince Phillip was given a much harder time when he was younger over his gaffs. Now they are laughed at. When Andrew and Fergie, Charles and Diana split up Prince Phillip was heard to say ''40 years of hard work down the drain''

He loathed Fergie and used to dive behind the sofa if he knew she was coming into the room. The Queen as always liked Fergie. Lets face it when Phillips die Andrew and Fergie will probably come out in the open again.

Though his relationship with Diana was tense when Charles and her split it got much better.

They needed to modernise. Looking back they were all a product of there time and didn't understand the damage they caused. They modernised kicking and screaming though had to survive.

Wills and Harry are the reason they still hold the position they do. I believe the only reason the royal family will continue.

Am I a royalist? You might think so. No I am not. However I do like Wills, Harry and Kate. My Mom was a big royalist so I kind of have looked at what is going on with them all my life because of the thread of my late Mom.

On a personal note I do not think Charles should become KIng and I think it should go straight to William. Whether that happens or not depends on how long The Queen lives, Charles health plus other factors about how the public react. The early days of Diana death have subsided however even in a poll a few years ago the majority wanted the throne to go to William

A very big square then BBJ? :91:

Shouldn't be able to pick and choose. Next in line should mean just that. Silly if not.

Well, they're not HUGE palaces....

I wonder who Prince Phillips is?

Perhaps Tom Hank could play him in a film?

As for Prince Philip, the racist old codger has lived an entire life of luxury off the British tax payer. I'm glad I'm not one of them. Funding to the royals should have been the first thing to be cut when they brought in austerity (they shouldn't have brought in austerity in the first place) but instead they took from the poor to give to the rich. It's disgraceful. As Fear pointed out, there are homeless everywhere in London and these loafers live in an empty palace.

Reluctant Republican. My head says Republican and get rid of the lot of them but I can't bring myself to be very vocal about it and think I'd be a little sad the day we became a Republic. Crazy.
