The Ross Barkley Thread

He must be thinking - Champions league at a sellout Bayern on a Wednesday night or Luton against Plymouth. Players far and wide will be praying they get a call from Emery and the team. And to think he cost £5m - great business as well a very shrewd buy.
It's great for us and him that he's sorted out his mental issues because at Everton he was a top prospect and an England player in the making. Lets hope we can get a season or 3 out of him in this state.

He was only losing the ball because he was the one taking responsibility for trying to play when we were under the cosh. He bought us vital seconds for us to regain our shape or dragged us 20 yards up the pitch to let us get away from our own goal. Really vital at that stage in the game.

He was definitely needed when Unai brought him on. His quality was there for all to see. Lack of game time is slowing his reaction time down a little. Bayern really didn't give us a lot of thinking time. This makes our performance even better in my opinion.

He wasn't playing for an elite manager then, though
If you remember Lew, he caught COVID and never really recovered. We know that COVID is a respiratory disease and people got affected differently and for different periods of time. Maybe he was never fit again after his bout. We'll never know for sure but he started great and then fell off a cliff, form wise. There's definitely more to his story than being shite or downing tools.

Nothing to do with all that lolly he got paid so early then - moving to Chelsea is right financially of course but was the wrong move career wise

I think at that point you could still argue that Everton to Chelsea wasn't a *purely* money move.

Agree - but I would like him play further forward as he does lose the ball a fair bit which could hurt us early doors.

I was thnking that. He seems to balance out the moments of quality with moments of slopiness in terms of dwelling and losing the ball cheaply. For this reason I wouldn't start him just yet, but he's getting closer. Just needs to cut out the silly mistakes. He reminds me of early Douggie. He used to do the same but grew out of it.

I know it’s a bit negative of me but I watched him lose the ball twice last night and could sense him losing it - but as was pointed out by zaijainforth earlier it could just be lack of sharpness from lack of games. I love the way he demands the ball tho, drives forward with it and looks to hurt teams with a pass or shooting himself. I can see why he got some goals for Luton last season - superb signing for me.

Barkley, Tielemens and Rogers lost the ball at the end of the game. They will work on that I am sure. But the ref was giving us nothing in that respect in terms of fouls though.

Noted that myself, but they were all mobbed rapidly and didn't have an easy out, meaning someone to pass to. Very harsh to pick up on this as a failing, but I'm guessing Unai will be working on this with the individuals and the team so that it is less prevalent in the future.

Onana had a good game IMO. But great to have Barkley to come on. Keeps possession and calms things down. Astute signing.

Credit to him for turning his career around as he was awful for the most part on loan with us which looked like it might be his last chance at a decent Premier league club. To then be so bad in France that only Luton wanted him for nothing and resurrect your career from there to playing champions league football is a real achievement.

Credit to Rob Edwards too, put him in a midfield two and let him play, kept his instructions fairly simple as well I'd imagine. Playing that type of role was key to why Unai wanted him I'd imagine.
