Whether we like alternative energy or not, I think we'll find the future far more hideous, with more forest fires, less water, less resources and people fighting over those resources. It is ok for some of us, we might not be around for the crunch, but it looks to me like there is a crunch coming.

They do look crap, but so do power plants etc...

I fully understood your point with regards too the Greens.
I would argue they no longer care less about the environment and are too busy playing politics with the pro Palestine mob.
They discovered quite a while ago that members are easier too get when appealing to that cause.

I miss the old gas works - Duddeston Manor (school) area was it? And the library actually, think the new one is pants. Looks like a goth skirt to me, as does the Bullring with Tina Turner's little arse design.

But I like the futuristic look of a swath of panels lol

Should have gone with reliable nuclear years ago.
I get all the arguments, but the fact is we are just pushing our problems elsewhere.
95/98 percent of all the solar panels used in UK solar farms and on private property are made in China, a country still commissioning new coal mines.
They are making headway with renewables but still commissioning new coal power plants and opening new mines.
 
The China stuff has been repeatedly shown to be bollocks mate. They invested heavily in coal for immediate production, and plants are now shutting because the double down on solar, batteries etc - as well as longer tail building on 30 odd new nuclear - has begun to come on line.

Their coal use is now at a historical lowest level despite the temporary new plants that were built, and has shifted to back up only because of renewables coming on line.

As you say, should've built more nuclear 30 odd years ago because we were already ahead of their curve at one point.

But China is always used as a 'net zero con' when it comes to coal, they are transitioning quicker than we are despite needing the fossil fuel temp cover for the land span and speed. Solar production is only theirs because the 'West' ignored what renewables would be for so long.

There's no real reason the UK (nor US, EU - Canada do btw!) shouldn't have a competitive market for those who choose to pay a minor amount more to avoid China. No different to any other industry in reality despite their subsidy/tariffs.

We bowed to the North Sea brigade despite having the know how and tech and just talked about being a leader instead of acting like it and on it. And I say that knowing there are plenty of UK companies turning billions on renewables - but it could've easily been so much more.

Yeah, I love my architecture, think the Gherkin looks like a vagazzled dildo, love Japanese/Chinese design, hate skyscrapers but quite like the BT Tower, love the look of panel and windmills (source Trump), think hydro dams are fantastic inventions, think most Grade 1/2 listed buildings should be burnt when used as tax write offs 'because of the upkeep' and I include Parliament in that, as the money should go to those historic buildings that can actually be saved and be more than just museums for the entitled in the future and so on lol

One started production by us mid last year, I'll be having a gander when it's finished. Given the land around here, I'm amazed we don't have a few windmills yet.

The world moves on, people have different tastes, the whole thing is a re run of pylons and those complaints - life is life.

I acknowledged that in my post.
However they are coming from a much higher starting point.
They still emit 25/30 times more greenhouse gasses than we do and are still the world's biggest greenhouse gasses polluters.

Whilst it is true at this moment, even allowing for the considerable drop given existing renewables and the short term coal spike (which is already dipping now its peaked), the picture is going to be wildly different in 2, 5, 10 years and they'll be the ones changing - not the rest of us by comparison because it's easy excuses, and laziness and dare I say a big dose of entitlement.

That was on show with the miners (albeit renewables not figuring in Maggie's thick blonde head) and the US now with the legacy fossil babies who've cashed in and would've still been the exact group who shit themselves with fears in the gold/oil rushes and capitalised on grandpappy starting the company to begin with.

Each generation does things their own way, refuse to change 'this is how we've always done it' never works out well and it's one of the reasons politics is so fucked as they are permanently 20 years behind the people, invention and the next big 'economic rush' when you miss ground zero.

Germans snapping up the motor talent, the US snapping up the tech talent, other countries bending over backwards for NHS trained staff...so on and so forth.

And it's why we buggered the green boom, wasted the best years of the North Sea and that goes on and on as well.

Playing catch up is the next best play for more reasons than economic.

A standard residential Grade 2 listed building does not get general tax concessions or special VAT discounts for regular repairs and maintenance
Re solar panels. Great idea to cover prime arable land in Lincolnshire with solar panels and make us even more reliant on foreign imported food
Windmills no longer bother me, but having lived by one they are irritatingly noisy.
Pylons and 3000+ acres of solar panels are two totally different arguments, and cable can be buried.

Correct. That being the case and the fact we emit 1% of world greenhouse gasses what the fuck is the mad Milliband rush, now replaced by an even bigger zealot, to get to net zero.
It's not like we are getting any cheaper bills is it.
Some of the world's most expensive electricity, no wonder we aren't competitive in manufacturing and a cost of living crisis.
But hey never mind it'll be cheaper tomorrow when they break the oil and gas link.
Jam tomorrow again.

This'll put the pigeons amongst the cat.

when i was working in the power stations,back in the 80s ,doing the breakdowns etc
i was told it was purified dust. no masks were needed you could see the asbestos,
floating in the air, and if you had an accident, they would say,we will keep you on for the winter, dont worry, did we believe it,, yeh , forkers,,seanie
 
In today's Trumpy news,

Capital One US have confirmed that back in 2020 they debanked him over anti money laundering concerns and his legal team have applied almost on the deadline to 'pause' his very own case against the BBC owing to the onerous workload involved in providing his financial records PMSL

They have also - as part of the late emergency order - sort permission to slightly amend his claim to withdraw damages so his financial records don't have to be legally disclosed !!!!!

Oh and the Senate have voted to hold Fauci in contempt for using his legal right to plead the 5th.

Funnily enough Mike Scotland have just had their first full year figure since putting their top rate up one percent to 49% and the tax take for the year is 22 million less than the previous year.

Truth is we are already behind, there is no rush - it's a right wing fantasy being peddled for political means.

Same as the immigration panic despite it falling year on year.

The race for net zero is as slow as ever, and you'll potentially find that following their eventual sale the Telegraph now really changes its turn having spent so long sucking the fossil cock to suit the right wing Tories, and now Reform/Restore/Repeat.

There's already be 3 tune change pieces on net zero, I predict that this will quite rapidly (but slowly enough to raise too many eyebrows) be their new editorial focus.

The new projects being built and coming online were authorised 5 odd years ago, the Grid isn't connecting any faster, the North Sea isn't being ignored or drilled less and so on and so forth.

When China reach net zero our 1% is going to look pretty fucking big at that point - and that is kind of the point when it comes to warming.

Too many who would lose money and don't like change are happy to harp the 1% because they know they won't have to answer for being the lazy money hungry whores that have held us back, when our 1% is actually what tips us over the edge - or keeps us at the peak when we breach.

US renewables have doubled down and have been working with equivalents in the EU and China (bizarrely) every time Trump has loosened restrictions and asked for fossil donations. The UK basically keeps talking the talk because we are weirdly still slightly ahead of our nearest and dearist in the EU (for the most part).

Again we could, should, be leading even though we have missed the explosion point and we are still skirting that (and selling off IP and talent) when playing catch up properly would still see is as a major leader here.

It's frustrating because it's political will and media bollocks. I said the other week Labour have already secured new gas decoupling contracts under Mad Ed that the Tories flat out ignored - that's literally all the Marxist bacon sandwich eater really achieved despite the lies and fears from the usual outlets.

And he's a zealot for physically doing what we all want - fuck gas off.

As ever, close the loopholes, ignore the %. You raise the % it's then more worthwhile finding/funding the loopholes for those who don't use them - and it means fuck all to those who use them anyway.

As for the jam comment, typical nuke reactor is a 15yr project even with looser planning. It's why's SMR's at circa 5 years are appealing.

Windmills and solar with batts is a matter of weeks/months when it can be connected in comparison - that's why it's more of a priority (not least upfront cost) for those wanting 'now' change.
