The Political Compass test

A gentle reminer that all, repeat all, questionnaires of this kind are BS. If on the internet they are double BS and probably fishing for data too. If you avoid social media then it is irrational to give any credence to them. To suggest that they indicate any organised body of political thought is absurd. Fill them in and you will place a target on yourself for the receipt of all sorts of other nonsense. If you complete one "honestly" they have all the info required to tailor what crap you receive.

Sorry Jo, I think you've had a massive swing and a miss there.

This isn't a facebook quiz asking which Disney princess are you? It's a longstanding legitimate attempt to try and explain the political spectrum in two dimensions rather than one.

It's pretty well thought of, given it's been going so long, but obviously not infallible - a neutral option would certainly make a lot of sense. The topic as a whole is one I find interesting, and the wiki article is below - the website political compass even has it's own wiki article.

Where the political parties appear on the spectrum is obviously more subjective than your own personal score, but I think it's a very useful tool to see how your own personal views actually compare with the options available, because a LOT of people continue to vote against their own interests, and treat it as a case of voting for "their" party like it's "their" football team.

There are some articles up there about the elections in various years, and the one I find interesting is 2010, especially when compared to 2019.

Also very interesting to see where american politicans tend to stand.

Not a nice way to talk about, Jo. Thought you lefties stuck together?
Some follow the party line Treacle, others are free thinkers.
I’ll admit that I fell for Corbyn when he first took power in Labour but quickly realised he was still doing student politics .
I’m underwhelmed by Sir K, so far.
There’s still plenty of time but it would be nice to inspire with a couple of policies.
You only need three these days, plus a three word slogan.
Build social housing !!
That would be a start.

Agree with your proposal, but your original suggestion was for a three word slogan!

Also I do not understand your reference to a "metropolitan elite statement", I guess a lot of people would say this regardless of location.

Metropolitan elite is anyone who lives in London and earns in excess of £50k a year. That’s the definition from oop norf.

That is a typical metropolitan elite statement, dare one say.

How about?

Tax anyone who makes more than 50k a year to 60%
Too many words but would win votes 👍

Wouldn't win mine ;-)

Theoretically I'm OK with paying more tax but only when the tax system is fair. If that came in people would just find ways to legally avoid it. I'd just increase my pension contribution to avoid paying it.

I'd rather we tackled the avoidance (all legal) schemes first. If everyone paid fair levels of tax then I'm OK with paying more.

Fairest may be to pay it not on income but on expenditure. Increase luxury item taxes e.g. Holidays, alcohol, tobacco, etc and decrease essentials e.g basic food stuff.

Three letter slogans are all the rage and clearly work with the electorate. Get brexit done was a clear vote winner.

Build back better works as well if you believe it.

I like Get Boris Out as it happens

I was just joshing with those who constantly try to sow division Mark 😉
Hang the Tories 😂
That would win people over wouldn’t it?

Seriously though, it does appear that a strap line makes a difference.
Winning votes is like anything else, it needs advertising.

Labour cannot win with Labour votes. We need to entice and convince the floating voter and some who have previously voted Tory.
Metropolitan elite people saying hang the Tories is why we remain in opposition

I get all that but stand by my position. Two big problems for me. First the selection and construction of questions and second the persistent perception of many that the questions themselves are evidence of wokery, or any other nonsense people want to jump up and down about. Any serious intent is vaporised in the public sphere.

I'm all for shotshy's BUILD SOCIAL HOUSING. It implies taxation but that debate can nbe resoloved.
