The play offs.

Vital 1st Team Regular
As an idea for the future.
team that finishes 3rd automatically in final.
5th play 6th in one off game , 5th gets home advantage.
Winner of that plays team finishing 4th one off game , team 4th home advantage. Winner of that into final.

Thoughts?

Would certainly be fairer based on how the teams performed over the whole season, but ideally they wouldn't exist anyway and the top 3 would go up.

To be brutally honest, the team finishing 3rd rarely gets promoted in the play-offs. Maybe it's just superstition but if we don't get second I'd rather finish 4th-6th!

Not strictly true Holte139 - as of 2016, the third-placed teams in the Championship went up 37% of the time, compared with 18.5% of 4th-placed sides, 25.9% of 5th-placed and 18.5% in 6th.

Huddersfield were 3rd last season and went up, so the % will be a bit higher still.

So if we don't make 3rd, we need to come 5th statistically to have a better chance! Mind you, I'd really rather finish in the top two to be honest.

As for your idea pvb, I'm down with that. It's a bit like the NFL where the top 'seed' gets a bye to the semi-final and has home advantage.

Don't think it will wash though - not enough money to be rinsed out of the fans by cutting the number of games, is there?

I'd actually like to see 17th in the Prem involved - maybe play the 5th-placed team in the Champ, or have a random draw of the 3/4/5 from the Champ and the 17th in the Prem. Would shake things up a bit!

I don't think it matters as it's usually the team going into the play offs with some momentum that usually get promoted.

I dislike the play offs and it should be the top 3 on merit having been the best over a season.

Dont agree with play-offs. the three best teams should go up as of right.
We dont have play offs for relegation, why promotion.

Never been a fan of play-offs and I don't think I ever will.

The club that finishes third should be promoted, they're the third best team across the season, so bloody well promote them.

That isn`t gonna happen is it ?

Money and let`s be honest, we would have took 6th last season and a chance to go up.

They seem to make more fuss about the play off winners than they do the top 2 , I know where I want to be and it's not the play offs

Yes spot on 57. Cant you tell it was originally an American marketing idea designed to give the also rans something to play for and drag in more money.

Good stats JPA, maybe finishing third wouldn't be so bad after all! The prospect of playing Fulham again is worrying me more than anything else right now.

Yes, I'd be very happy not to see Fulham again this season!!

Had a discussion about this with my wife last night.

I said I wouldn't be going to Wembley for a play-off final - for me, you don't have 'finals' for third place.

She said she's going if we're in it which means I'll be in the dog-house if we are.

Top three should go up automatically. Simple.
