The Plastic Crisis/Environment Thread

It turns out that the vast majority of plastic is not recyclable and the whole waste separation thing is more about making people feel that they are making a difference and "saving the planet" rather than making any meaningful difference.

Yes, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has done a couple of programmes on this.

I've just come to the conclusion all I can do is recycle what I am told I can, cut down where possible on buying the things that can't, buy recycled products where possible and the rest, has to be left to those in charge, both of Governments and of top companies.

Yup, that's largely true but even then, at least over here, Council's are failing to sort the recyclable plastic and just landfilling/burning or exporting the lot.

Yep, I’ve seen or heard reports on this before. I believe we ship a lot of recycling to Turkey which gets put into a hole into the ground and a lady over there was rightly calling it out.

But people like think they are saving the talking dolphins, and celebs like that twat Joe Lycett can play on it for his own PR which in reality is probably doing a lot less for the planet than we believe.

Until the facilities and infrastructure for mass recycling are built locally, I do feel it’s leading us into a false sense of change.

I didn’t realise how much of the emissions came from cement until Fieldy posted it recently, that’s the culprit that needs to be addressed.

The world is "dangerously close" to running out of time to stop a climate change catastrophe, the UK government's climate chief Alok Sharma has said.
Mr Sharma - who is leading COP26, the climate summit hosted by the UK this year - said the effects were already clear with floods, fires and heatwaves.
"We can't afford to wait two years, five years, 10 years - this is the moment," he told the Observer.
But he did not condemn the government for allowing more fossil fuel projects.
And he defended his decision to travel to more than 30 countries in seven months.

Yes massive heatwaves. Apart from the UK where I've worn a jacket all 'summer' apart from a one week period.

Report out today by the UN saying Humans can no longer stop global warming. I read it in The New York Times but it is being widely reported.

Coal needs to be consigned to history to limit global warming, says PM Boris Johnson, describing a UN report on climate change as "sobering".
Mr Johnson said there needed to be a shift towards clean energy sources, as well as providing "climate finance for countries on the frontline".

Piff, paff, wiffle....joined up thinking.

A bit shock jockey for understandable reasons but whatshisface is quoted a bit differently elsewhere.

But we can stop it but it's time to stop pissing around - the message hasn't got through to Bojo or Sharma though.

With that said, we are still doing more than most and that's worrying!

Saw on the news at the weekend a protest in Germany where they are still mining and burning coal at a power station, think it said they were going to carry on until 2038.

The main problems are going green are expensive but the options are there. We're also paying for a total lack of planning by successive Gov's over the last 30 years - had missed that report so I'm guessing Germany is the same.

I could be wrong, and there are issues with Nuke power but I'm sure I've read it takes 10 yrs to build a station. We've had two in the pipeline since 2010 I think and not a single brick has been laid.

Yes remember how Johnson wanted every house to have the ground source heat pumps and has now baulked at the cost.
