The Ped Report Middlesbrough 2-2 City

With the Stretfords having squandered more home points in their fortunate draw with Swansea this morning, the stage was set for City to ease ahead with a win at Middlesbrough, a team finding goalscoring difficult. United were awarded yet another dubious penalty before letting in a free kick getting themselves out of the door with one point when they deserved none.

So what does Guardiola do? He fields an experimental team clearly showing no respect to Middlesbrough and also clearly showing that he still does not get the Barclays Premier League. In this league previous results count for nothing, it what happens today that counts. You know against the bottom feeders that they will pile bodies into their penalty area and look to get something on the break. Avoiding that is about discipline and when you look at the eleven starters for City. Kompany apart, I didn`t see discipline as a catchword.

City have worked happily with a back three even going back to the days of Kevin Keegan and when you couple that with taking away two of your biggest threats by relegating Sane and Sterling to the bench, Guardiola clearly thought he was still Barcelona`s coach as they lined up against the likes of Osasuna.

The back three consisted of the pace merchants known as Kompany, Otamendi and Kolarov, with a midfield four consisting of Navas. Fernandinho, Garcia and of all people Clichy. De Bruyne then was detailed to operate in behind Aguero and Jesus. So 3-4-1-2. A new formation in a match that simply demanded they play their usual stuff and get on with it.

Yes, it could have been all so different had Aguero scored in the first minute or at least had someone looking for his cross-six-yard-box effort. But it was to be a long haul in a first half where City as usual dominated but as is usual these days, ineffectively.

City could and should have gone ahead after 36 minutes when a deep cross from Otamendi found Jesus who had crept in between two Boro defenders, but his header went wide when a goal would have been the easier option.

Then with City piling on the pressure a toe bunger out of defence found Otamendi and Navas caught too far up field and Downing was away into the space. Kompany had to move across leaving space on the edge of the box. Although Downing`s cross was not one of his trade mark efforts, it somehow found its way to the Beast himself who reminded City of his better days at the Etihad with a well struck shot in off the post which left Caballero rooted to the floor.

Negredo might even have even made it 2-0 moments later but this time he was off target. City`s defending is what you would expect from a team who is uncomfortable with this formation and Boro, on the break have found opportunities.

Amazingly one might say that the team who has scored more away goals than any other didn`t even have a shot of note over the first 45 minutes as Pep`s experiment was beginning to look like a disaster.

He changed it immediately at the start of the second half by replacing Clichy and Garcia to add the pace and threat that was missing in the first half. Indeed the second half commenced with City fully on the front foot with Boro pinned in their own half. But it was to be the 70th minute before City could muster an equaliser and even then it was only from the penalty spot.

Sane went down a bit too easily in the box under a challenge from De Roon and up stepped Aguero to blast home the equaliser. Surely now City could get this game won. But no. Otamendi gave away one his usual stupid free kicks as Traore threatened to get away. The free kick was weakly palmed away by Caballero and it fell to Negredo who conjured up a bit of magic to hold off the challenge and set up of all people Chambers to drill home from edge of the box. Boro, their fans and the North East of England went mental, Sunderland excepted.

Fumes were appearing from the ears of the City faithful who made the arduous journey to what at times looks like the end of the world when you get there. And it didn`t stop there. The villain of the Etihad De Roon went close with a shot before City finally got something moving. A free kick wide on the left was slipped short from Sane to Aguero who clipped it goalwards. Jesus outjumped the cover to head home as City equalised for the second time.

This was a very welcome goal for the fans and to an extent for Guardiola who for me has been responsible for this slip up. The inexplicable tactics have clearly not worked today and I believe that if he was going to make changes he should have read this morning`s offering from the Pedmachine. Aguero`s pass was a midfielder`s pass, the kind you might see from Silva or Yaya. It found a City shirt which in turn found the net.

It`s almost as if Guardiola is trying to sabotage City`s hopes of getting back into the Champions League. I`m not convinced we have any easy passages in any match before the season ends and Guardiola needs to understand this. He will point to three home games coming up but does he really think Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Brom will be a walkover? Get real Pep. You continue to make life difficult for yourself and your team with your idiotic selections.

City find themselves with an identical record to Liverpool although the Scousers have scored more goals than City and are still in third place. Watford arrive in town tomorrow but Sue is still not confident that her boys will overcome them easily. Will it be another night ironing in the bedroom or hiding under the bed for Sue?

For now, like many City fans, I am disappointed that City did not cash up today. We can see before our eyes the level of overhaul that is needed in the summer and I`m sure that Txiki Bergiristain is working hard to secure the targets Pep feels City need. Today`s result has nothing to endear Guardiola to my dad and has no doubt left many City fans tearing their hair out.

Sam Allardyce will not present City with any gifts next week. Everyone has seen how to frustrate and deal with City and if Pep is stupid enough to replicate these tactics against a team containing Zaha and Townsend then the Blues could be in for trouble. The back four selected against the Stretfords look a much better bet that what he put on show today.

Well I too am "am disappointed that City did not cash up" but the relentless wave of negativity from the Ped today is too much for me to bear any more.

Before I go a few minor points......

Nothing to say about the utterly pathetic and limp way in which Adama opted to crash to the ground after Otamendi barely touched the ox of a player's left shoulder before he chose to crash to the turf? Pretty harsh on OUR defender I must say.

Negredo's 'bit of magic' was actually a rather speculative back heel which took a deflection into the path of Chambers. Rather fortunate I would say.

I could go in but am already too depressed to bother anymore.

Disappointed that Bravo didn't come in for any criticism which is a bit of a surprise.

Guardiola Out is clearly the mantra of the day.

I have had enough

Think we are all a bit down at the moment and the Ped is reflecting that.
Keep the chin up Skoorb, it is only one man's opinion.

Nice to see Garcia get a start, shame he couldn't affect the game from deep although he was tidy.

I've read that that that point earned yesterday means that we have broken our record for away points earned in a season. Now if the team and manager can get the fans behind them, instead of the flat atmosphere and constant groaning when we're playing at home, we may reverse our fortunes and secure the points needed to make top four. Onwards and upwards.

Forgot to mention, Aguero is now outright 2nd highest scorer of all time at the club with the goal notched yesterday. And what was particularly pleasing was seeing him provide the assist for Jesus, his first assist of the season in the league if I'm not mistaken, maybe just maybe this may be the start of an understanding between the two that could be developed next season and in turn see Aguero beat the all time City scorers record and shoot us back in to contention for trophies.

Don't go Skoorb, being a City supporter is like being on a perpetual roller coaster, thank god we have a summer break to recharge. I too have issues with Ped calling our keeper a Clown, but you just smile and move on. Well done Kun 31 goals and 4 assists in all competitions this season and he was injured for weeks, what a player, we are privileged to have him and I hope he stays to break the all time scorer record.

All time Eric Brook, played 499 for 179 goals. Come on Kun.

Another thing I believe worthy of reporting is that that point yesterday saw us equal our points tally for last season with 12 points left to play for.

I agree BD loads of positives there

We are all down cause Pep is a bigger tinker man than tinkerman
We just don't know what City will turn up

Even so we should still have beaten second from bottom, sometimes you get over confident and surprised that the opposition can up their game to your level and you lower yours, but in the end Sergio creeps closer to being the record scorer for City and we finally get a penalty and people can moan all they like about he went down too easily, everyone does it, stay on your feet you get nothing.

As BD says we have reached last years points total and still have games to spare, third place is ours and a fit Gabriel, Sergio and David would be a bonus.

Don't want anything sugar coated but it's nice to see a bit of balance. We were poor in the first half, Pep tried something different probably because of tired legs from Thursday night, it didn't work, although that said Jesus had one laid on a plate for him by Aguero and then there was the free header at the back post, so it's not as if we created nothin that half, on a different day and all that.

On the plus side he acted, made the changes quickly and changed the game, we should've won from there but for some more slapstick defending.

I think tired legs had something to do with it BD, especially after two hard games, but he still had the players to play a back four, I think he recognised this early on probably before halftime and did not want to embarrass the players hence the reason he made no changes and then two quick ones.

Having done that we started to play with space and time, but their second was just unlucky with no-one wanting to give it one and in the end the rub of the green went to Boro, but we still camped out and although the players rating in most of the papers slate us, we picked ourselves up and got back into it.

I am still annoyed at Neville laughing at Claudio for being stretchered off, as though it was the decision of Claudio and that would be completely wrong and although I am off topic here, The rags get the plaudits for being resilient, whereas I think that the rags think it was a result to get a draw and even had the mind set to come for a draw, this has not been the case for decades.

Back on track teams at the bottom who need points are very dangerous at this time of the season and need to be treated as a title rival, This is another lesson that Pep has learned where he has worked in league where this sort of game would be a walk over.

I do believe that he will be different next season, but may still tinker with the side, but three at the back is not our bag unless he gets some defenders who can play that system.

Because of a bit of criticism do I detect a note of defensiveness?
Whatever stats are put up won't change the position City is in re the table and THAT is the stat that counts.
Kun is indeed a great player and goal scorer but he missed an awful amount of chances.
A stat that is missing is the one that shows chances missed by the team as a whole, shots not taken and the ones on target compared to the ones not on target.
Between Kun and Gabriel I'm sure we will do a lot of damage next year along with Sane and Silva though unless Sterling shows a great deal of improvement in front of goal, more consistency, he will lose his place.
Been a hard year after a good start and everyone is entitled to their opinion and the respect of our fellow VMCers.
Still great to be a City supporter isn't it.

Our Captain remains confident of a top 4 finish according to this Daily Mail article, we do have an easier run in than the Rags, so I think he is correct to be optimistic.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4462608/Manchester-City-s-Kompany-vows-secure-four-finish.html

It is a simple equation John, win all our matches guarantees a top four, if the rags win the Europa League it does not guarantee us a CL place, so we really need third to be assured of that

I think that scenario would only have come into play had Leicester won the CL and rags the Ropey. Rags winning Ropey on its own doesn't affect us, as BD says.

Any word on whether Boro are being charged for failing to control their players? At least two of them grabbed the ref after the penalty decision.

They wasn't this much hoohaaa when we were denied a pen against Arsenal and in my opinion it was a penalty soft or not. I remember recently Aguero staying on his feet and someone commented if he had gone down he would have got a pen, you just can't win sometimes.
