Gills return to Priestfield today looking to extended our winning run in the league to four at the expense of Forest Green Rovers, a side at the foot of the table and on their third manager of the season following Troy Deeney's abrupt sacking after just six games in charge.
Last time out we finally got shot of the "can't come from behind to win" monkey, as we shrugged off an ineffectual first hour to snatch a win away against a youthful Accrington side. If ever there's a day to crack the "not scored four goals in a game since Jesus was in sandals" issue, then this is surely it. But complacency won't get us the three points today, a fast start to the game and far more ruthless finishing will. Forest Green will surely be looking to prove that they aren't all the things that Deeney said they were in the press, so there may be significantly more fight in them than expected making for an interesting match this afternoon.
It looks like we have a clean bill of health for the squad today, with Nadesan and Hawkins recovering from the illness that saw the former miss out entirely last Saturday, while Dom Jefferies has returned following injury. We lost one and gained one from the squad this week, Lewis Walker ended a frustrating spell with us by toddling off to non league with Woking, while "Europe's leading assist-making defender", Remeao Hutton signed from the Swine for an undisclosed fee. I wish both tremendous amounts of luck at their new clubs.
The head to head is erm... limited to the dour, uneventful and downright boring 0-0 played out at the New Lawn just before Christmas in what was Deeney's managerial bow. How they put a highlights package together for that I will never know.
Due to the lack of historic footage between the sides, I thought I'd go with an "On This Day" of a resounding home win, only to discover that we've not played a game at Priestfield on 20th January for exactly 50 years, a 3-0 win over Crewe in front of 11500. Match report HERE. Instead, you're getting footage of a 3-1 away win at Scunny six years ago today, because i) it's a win ii) I went iii) Eaaaaaves; and iv) we score more than once.
For me today could go one of three ways...
- Our usual huff and puff resulting in a 1-0 win. - We run riot over a demoralised FGR and finally show our class, scoring several times in the process.
- Osadebe/Inniss come back to haunt us and we lose meekly causing much wailing and gnashing of teeth and resulting in the water feature needing to be drained of piss post-match.
It'd be nice, just once, to get to 5pm saying that Gills have played an absolute blinder and fully deserved their win, an eventuality that can be counted on the fingers of one hand (unless you're a Swindon fan) across the last couple of seasons. Will today be the day?
