Good goal. Any striker would have been proud of it. True strikers dont give a f how it goes in, their job is just to score and deflections are just as good as any other type. Say you purposely hit it through a ruck of players knowing there is a chance that it is deflected in!!!!!

I think it is arguable if you compare Ainsworth's record at Wycombe to Clemence's at Barrow.

It is a pity that threads are so numerous on this board as It would be interesting to look back and see what Herr's contribution was to the threads when:
1. Ainsworth was appointed at a time when it was Coleman's turn to get it in the neck.
2. We were approaching the record for unbeaten games
3. Ainsworth was recovering from his heart procedure when, at the time, it was thought by many that his absence f@cked up our season.

I can't actually remember anyone saying he was definitely a shit manager at any of those times, so maybe Herr was away or being quiet on the subjects.
 
In the spirit of a petty I told you so, what distinguishes the first season of both Pulis and Allen? They both had plenty of money to assemble a promotion winning side.

Neither had particularly excelled themselves elsewhere but had learned valuable lessons. Disregarding all the actual football stuff they knew that to accept a post with a poor, or modest budget is to invite pressure and failure. Taylor learned that lesson at Southend and it' s why he declined to lead us into the second tier.

Appointing managers is always a gamble. If you go for a clean face it's a throw of the dice. An old hand will most likely have good and bad spells on his CV but he should at least know how to set up and manage a squad.

Weird response, but I'll play along.

I was probably, like most, not unhappy at his appointment and impressed with his start to his time here.

However, as has repeatedly been stated, the last 11 months (so the majority) of his tenure have been utter rubbish. My current opinion of the manager is based on that, a perceived lack of structure and style of play and his assertion that...

GA "I said we'll make this club better than it is when I took over a year ago"

But it isn't better.

I don’t think Pulis had plenty of money in his first season, if my memory serves me well only paid 100k for butler and 5k for fortune west. I might be wrong but I thought the rest came on free transfers. In the years that followed he was definitely given money.

Having just checked, we spent nothing on transfer fees under Allen in the 2012/13 season? I was unaware that we had an unusually large budget in 1995/96, could you provide a source for that?

Transfer fees is half the story and there was £50K for Bailey. That team was assembled by offering good money to players

Think I remember Tony Butler going to Blackpool for £235k in the same season which would have covered any fees paid

I’d forgotten about Bailey, for some reason I thought he was a free transfer. We have offered good money to players in recent years though, and made quite a few undisclosed transfers.

I don't have forensic evidence of course but I don't think Deon Burton was attracted by peanuts. My understanding is that the players were on very generous bonuses for results.
