The Official Android Thread

TuBBz

Are You Local?
This thread is intended to provide a pool of info for all the android users out there

I shall attempt to highlight the best apps and games and link to these files when I can

Share your knowledge people and we can get the best out of our awesome phones

Please DO NOT use this thread to say my iphone is better than your android blah blah blah as there is the mobile phone thread for that already in place

Let us know what works for you and what doesn't and as a collective we can try and solve the problem

Android can multi task up to 32 apps at one time and this can have a dramatic effect on your battery life

Your first port of call for apps should be a task killer which you can stop processes automatically or manually

Personally I have programmed mine to auto kill every 15mins

You can also exclude any program you want to keep running

Manage files and perform backups on your Android device

INFO

Looking for a free file manager for Android? Look no further than Astro File Manager, a free application for organizing documents, files and folders, managing tasks and processes, and performing backups.

[IMG=http://screenshots.en.softonic.com/en/scrn/91000/91365/astro-file-manager-2-2-4-01-300x261.png]

Working with Astro File Manager is a joy thanks to the program's clear, customizable user interface. It allows you to perform a wide variety of tasks via a sliding toolbar at the top of the screen. The main window shows you all of the folders on your system and perusing the files in these folders is made easy by the inclusion of Up, Back and Next buttons to navigate through the directories.

Astro File Manager lets you choose to view files and folders either in traditional list format, or as icons, which feels a lot more like the Windows Explorer. Files and folders can be sorted by name, date, size or type. Astro File Manager also includes a reliable search tool for quickly finding a specific file.

Among Astro File Manager's other features are its ability to open ZIP and TAR compressed files, although the app doesn't currently support RAR files, which is a bit of a shame.

Manage your apps

Astro File Manager comes with a very handy application manager and backup tool. Here you can view a list of all your installed apps, then choose to uninstall them or back them up to your SD card at the tap of a button. There's also a process manager, where you can view currently-running apps, services and process, and kill them instantly if you wish.

Astro File Manager is arguably the best file management app for Android, and it gives you a lot more control over your device.

Pros
Very easy to navigate files
Task and process manager
Perform application backups
Handles ZIP and TAR files

Star Chart v1.7

Requirements: (for Android version 2.1 and higher)
Overview: Now you can have a virtual star chart in your pocket! Look through the eyes of your Android device* to see a virtual window into the whole visible universe. Much better than google sky

[img=http://i.imgur.com/fTHI9.jpg] [img=http://i.imgur.com/TIua1.jpg]

All you have to do is point your Android device* at the sky and Star Chart will tell you exactly what you are looking at.

Using state of the art GPS technology, an accurate 3D universe, and all of the latest high tech functionality, Star Chart calculates – in real time - the current location of every star and planet visible from Earth and shows you precisely where they are; even in broad daylight!

Want to know what that bright star is called? Point your device at it – you might just find out it’s a planet!

Want to know what the night sky looks like to people on the other side of the earth? Well just point your device down!

Want to know where your star sign is in the sky? Star Chart will tell you all this and more.

Star Charts features include:
- Just point and view. No need to scroll around the screen to find out what you are looking at*.

- Alternatively, look around the sky using finger gestures – perfect for armchair astronomers!

- Supports dynamic device orientation viewing. Allows you to view the night sky whilst holding your Android device at any angle.

- Accurately depicts all the visible stars of the northern and southern hemispheres - a total of over 5000 stars!

- Displays all the planets of the solar system, plus the sun and the moon.

- Displays all 88 constellations, with constellation imagery based on the beautiful artwork by 15th century astronomer Johannes Hevelius.

- Includes entire Messier catalogue of exotic deep sky objects.

- Tap on anything in the sky and get the facts on what you are looking at, including distance and brightness.

- Very powerful zoom function, lets you view the sky in extra detail, using intuitive finger gestures.

- Fully configurable. Star Chart displays only the sky objects that you are interested in.

- Allows you to view the sky underneath the horizon (unlike other more expensive applications). So now you can see where the sun is, even at night!

- Manually set your location to find out what the sky looks like from anywhere in the world.

- Full search feature

- Installable on an SD card

So point your Android device at the sky and see what's out there!

What's in this version:
Finger scrolling is now much more responsive.
Options menu now rotates with orientation of device.
Options menu respects Night Vision mode.

I strongly suggest you install Flash available from the market to allow you to stream any TV or video's from any of your favourite websites

would this help the playing of youtube or is that just signal strength?

ie last night got youtube up and was playing a video but it was so stop and start it was not worth it!

Think that is down to signal strength though.
