The Modern Supporter

I was just reading some posts regarding Bentaleb's comments about our fans, and thought it deserved a separate thread. I am not going to detach our supporters from any others in the prem, because I don't think that there is that much difference. It's true to say that supporters of clubs who have just been promoted will more than likely be a bit more energetic than those of bigger clubs. This I would put down to expectation. It's also true to say that certain stadiums hold the noise better than others.

The fact is that football in this country is very expensive, and as a result is attracting a different type of supporter. Whether you think it is right or not, there are a lot more families attending matches now, whereas in the past it was primarily the working class man who made up the majority of the stadium. Needless to say, it's the working class male between about twenty and fifty who make most of the noise. Secondly, the Liberal faction have got their way, and supporters are no longer allowed to sing anything that may vaguely upset any minority. Unfortunately the Scousers ruined it for many, and as a result we are all meant to sit down now. Finally, unsociable kick off times are destroying the atmosphere. A big part of the day is spending three or fours in the pub before the game, but when the game kicks off at mid day this isn't so easy.

Unfortunately things won't change, and to be honest I think they will get even worse. On the continent the atmosphere is much the same as it used to be in this country, but they have managed to maintain the status quo. It's all very sad, but I know there are those people on here who believe that the changes are a positive thing. Different strokes for different folks I suppose !!

When there is more net revenue derived from those that watch on TV than those that attend the game those that watch on TV are going to drive the bus.

It's that simple and it is killing sport as we know it everywhere.

Perhaps virtual reality participation will return some of the atmosphere.

I was in turin last weekend and got tickets to see torino v fiorentina for 20 euro. Well those fans were awesome. A whole mixture of fans who were singing from the first to final whistle. A real atmosphere.

We just have to accept that 3/4 of fans just want to go to games to watch football and then go home. Lets be honest its always one stand in most english grounds that make the noise anyway.

We just have to accept things in this country regarding price. We always get mugged off but never do anything about it. As long as the demand is there then the prices will get higher.
