The Lucas Digne Thread

Thought he was excellent today only beaten to my MOTM by Youri. Maatsen has a fight on his hands to try and nick that left back spot
He was . Again.

Much maligned over his time with us. I was in the minority not seeing Moreno as any better and Luca has comfortably seen him off.
And he is seeing off Maatsen aswell as starting for France . Great stuff.

Yep, reserve fullback for Villa and France, our last chance to sell him while he still has some value. Sadly, this is modern football where money is king and players have to be sold before nobody wants them.
I think with Lucas, this is the time, now or never
We might be considering keeping him, it'll be hard to find his level of quality for the fee because he's probably only netting 10m unless we can send him to SA. Course if we could shift Moreno and Digne for a combined 15m we probably knock 200k off the books and 15m would be enough to find another Moreno.

I think we'll have to do that with Emi2 and Leon, if we can fraud 40m combined for both that'll buy us a decent RWer.

I'd also think getting the 15m we paid for Cash (we could probably get 20, 25 would be pushing out luck) would be enough for a more composed RB. Palace signed that Munoz for 8m, there is a player out there somewhere that might not be better than Cash overall but would suit us and could do a stint until Garcia is truly ready. Which reminds me we have to get rid of Ned too.

I saw him quoted as saying the higher ups at Villa want him to stay and he is happy to.

With him and Maatsen, that position is covered, I don't see the point in getting rid of him.
If we don't need to financially then as our best performing left back last season and the season before then he absolutely stays .

The parameters seem to have now moved from not being good enough to we must sell to max the fee we get. Which i guess proves that he is good enough after all if that is now the rationale.

Like when he saw Moreno off I have yet to see anything in Maatsen that suggests it's a given he will wholly displace Digne anytime soon.

There is no sense in selling Digne other than for psr reasons. Maatsen and him in the squad is as strong as anything in that position in the league. It'll be a backward step because we wont replace him with a current top international side LB who is prepared to sit behind Maatsen.

The other thing is Digne is a leader. Probably not on the level of Tyrone or John but he’s more the of lad you’d want in the pitch to help you see out a 1-0 lead.

I think Maatsen will oust him long term. He is technically gifted and rapid. We saw time and again he is a great weapon to break out when you need a goal. He offers pace, width and drive you’re not getting from Digne. And he has enough quality to provide good cut backs and even find the net.

It’s the perfect 1–2 in modern football. A solid starter and a dynamic game changing sub. In time I think Maatsen will be both because defensive awareness improves with time and experience.

Happy for Digne to stay but dock him a week's wages every time he shouts "Another one!" into the camera. "Pour encourager les autres", as he might say.
