High Street Stores & Other Businesses At Risk

(High street thread on this... the report from BBC says they will remain separate brands)

Sainsburies and Asda to merge: not a closure but will shake up the supermarkets and Tesco's. Jobs will be lost if this goes through

So Sainbury's will slightly lower prices to compete better, ASDA slightly raise prices to compete better.

Shareholders benefit - the public and workers get screwed again.

House of Fraser are in danger too. It appears there is a Chinese group looking to buy, but only on the proviso that some stores are closed.

Yep store closure plus a CVA , didn't realise they were already Chinese owned and being sold to another Chinese conglomerate.
Do we own anything in this country anymore

Well high street bookies are fucked now thanks to the government.

Guess we'll be seeing more charity shops taking their place. Just what we need.

Why, what has happened? As if they don't already have enough competition from the online bookmakers.

And LOL @col8

To be fair bookmakers said it wasn't about profit it was about choice to begin with. Now people can't gamble away a grand in about 30 minutes and suddenly they'll be job losses.

Not great all this is it? The uncertainty in the market at the moment is awful, we have never really fully recovered from the last recession I don't think. Investment has been low and the Gov policy of austerity has gone on far too long. They've crippled us!
