The England euros thread

I honestly think the FA might contact Klopp to see if he's in the slightest interested

The thing is even Klopp would have his work cutout improving on Southgates results

Genuinely gutted for him.
Think it’s the right decision though. But if England do lift a trophy in the next few years I hope they acknowledge the foundations he has laid.
The Spanish FA was slagged off for selecting De La Fuente, and look what happened.

The Press, who know fuck all about picking Managers, will have their favourite, and will no doubt be spouting off about being the voice of the people, and the supporters, who know less than the press do, will be demanding the impossible in Guardiola or Klopp.

Potter or Howe will be on death row before a ball has been kicked

Can't see Howe leaving Newcastle for this job tbh

Can you begin to imagine the reaction from people like Paul Dacre, Piers Morgan and Nigel Fartrage if a German, never mind a foreigner, is appointed.

I think Klopp is far too smart to even consider the job.

He'd jeopardise his legacy with the Scousers, too.

No chance Klopp would even entertain the idea.

I mean, Germany didn't exactly pull up trees this tournament; would anyone, seriously, see him choosing England over his home country (not that the FA would even go near him).

You can count Pochettino, too, as a pie-in-the-sky option the deluded will think is possible.

It'll be Fat Frank Lampard, IMO

I would. It be surprised at all if it’s Lampard either

No one is decrying Southgate results. It’s the performances and loyalty to underperforming players which frustrated the shit out of me, and his lack of proactivity during games to changes things earlier

Getting to the final was superb. How we got there was dire, luck v Slovakia, and a handful of very special, world class moments

Lampard or Carsley

So, there you have it...

Southgate hounded out.
A decent group of players who were fully behind him, now, will suddenly burst out of their shells and start ripping the best international sides apart...with Carsley, Lampard or Potter at the helm.

Hmm, interesting...

That, or some deluded sorts will see the above and fancifully choose Klopp, Poch or Pep, conveniently forgetting that the FA will not go near any of them....nor will any of them countenance such nonsense.

The bit I disagree with is in do think the FA would ask the question to all 3. All 3 will likely say no, but they should ask the question

The Pep one intrigues me. There isn’t a club job he can take now which would fulfill his ambitions. Maybe one more CL, possibly, but I see his next role as the manager of Brazil or England.

I think his Catalonian roots stops him from the Spanish job (possibly) but I do see his next role as an international manager

You say underperforming players or is it that they are not replicating their club form? which is two different things altogether.

It is a quantum leap, playing for your club, with a load of talented foreigners holding your hand, to playing for your Country with no safety net whatsoever.

You make a very good point; hardly any value is put on the togetherness and kindred spirit in the team, which more often than not, compensates for that missing bit of quality.

It’s a strange situation to see Southgate go, because while he has obviously been very successful, and though there’s a significant chance the next manager will do worse than him, it feels like exactly the right time for him to depart and hopefully find someone who can work on taking us that one extra step - a step that I feel would always have eluded Southgate who, despite being a nice bloke with all the right intentions, never really built more than a functional side that ground its way to the business-end of tournaments. England felt like a team very much in his image; inexpressive, safe, serviceable, determined but not dynamic.

It’s a question really of whether you would have wanted to stick or twist - stick with the safety of solid results and nearly moments, or twist in the hope of finding somebody who can unlock the attacking talent that seemed to spend most of the tournament in the gaol of its own half, struggling to emerge from the rigidity of our defensive structure. Maybe Southgate would have eventually won a tournament, but there was always a feeling that any top team was beyond us in a knockout game. It’s a problem really that England have struggled to overcome for a generation - how to beat truly world-class nations when everything is on the line. It’s not unique to Southgate that that final obstacle remains.

Farage was married to a German, and ensured that he has post- Brexit EU rights of free movement before all of his shenanigans taking the rights of the rest of us away. But who cares what Farage thinks anyway, especially the FA?
