Article 50 is triggered today, amid chaos in Northern Ireland, and calls (and a vote in the Scottish Assembly) for a second independence referendum for Scotland.
Is this the beginning of the end for the 'United' Kingdom as we know it? By the end of the decade, only 3 years away now, we could be left with a Great Britain of just England and Wales, with Scotland independent and Northern Ireland having voted to re-unify with the Republic of Ireland. Incredible. Who would have though that likely at the last General Election, or even at the EU Referendum less than 12 months ago?
After all, there is provision in the Good Friday agreement for Northern Ireland to hold a reunification referendum should polls demand one (the UK government would be obliged to permit this).
Both Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to remain in the EU, and who can blame them for not wanting to be dragged into something they didn't want? And how can the Prime Minister start banging on now about the UK being stronger together while breaking us away from a strong political and economic union at the very same moment?
As we press on with Brexit come what May (see what i did there?), there is no doubt in my mind that this is the beginning of the end for our union. Whether that's bad or good, who knows? Fascinating times.
