The End of the 'United' Kingdom?

Alert Team
Article 50 is triggered today, amid chaos in Northern Ireland, and calls (and a vote in the Scottish Assembly) for a second independence referendum for Scotland.

Is this the beginning of the end for the 'United' Kingdom as we know it? By the end of the decade, only 3 years away now, we could be left with a Great Britain of just England and Wales, with Scotland independent and Northern Ireland having voted to re-unify with the Republic of Ireland. Incredible. Who would have though that likely at the last General Election, or even at the EU Referendum less than 12 months ago?

After all, there is provision in the Good Friday agreement for Northern Ireland to hold a reunification referendum should polls demand one (the UK government would be obliged to permit this).

Both Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to remain in the EU, and who can blame them for not wanting to be dragged into something they didn't want? And how can the Prime Minister start banging on now about the UK being stronger together while breaking us away from a strong political and economic union at the very same moment?

As we press on with Brexit come what May (see what i did there?), there is no doubt in my mind that this is the beginning of the end for our union. Whether that's bad or good, who knows? Fascinating times.

I'd rather a confederacy anyway. It's time we all had full devolution with a union for just very high level decisions agreed upon by a small number of representatives and England shouldn't dominate this, it should have it's own agenda.

Great day, very happy we have triggered article 50, as for the other nations that make up the UK then it is upto them what they want to do, if they want to leave the Union, fine in my book.

If Scotland and NI pull away we should see tax reductions for us as we won't have to subsidise them any more .

I was reading about the prospects of a united Ireland recently. It's ironic that support for a united Ireland in Ireland is probably at its lowest in 100 years and yet it's now much more likely than ever.

I wonder if the Unionists will kick off under a united Ireland. I can't imagine Paisley's followers to be too happy about being ruled by the papists in Dublin.

Why do they need to align themselves with either GB or Ireland? It'd be a rebirth of the country.

Become a tax haven and create a new identity. Join the EU, job done.

:35: ... I'm with you Wurzel, great day now Article 50 has finally been triggered. Now we can get things sorted and reopen old trading links with some of our old commonwealth country friends.

Regarding the Union, I'd prefer us to stay together, but only if the majority of those residing in the likes of Scotland, N. Ireland and Wales want to remain with us. If they don't fair does, let them drown if they want to jump into the water.....

:14:

The Scots should be careful what they wish for . They could quickly become a 3rd world country if they aren't careful

I would rather be out of the EU. The euro will probably collapse soon.

Of course they will, they even kicked off about holding a joint reception in Belfast for the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland teams after their Euro 2016 campaigns.

In the good old days they held the balance of power in Westminster.

I don't think anyone gives a fuck what the Ulster Unionists think or want now.

Kicking off will only give those who want revenge against them the excuse to put the boot in.

Still, it's kinda part of the culture of Northern Ireland.

Interesting times.

Not a great day for me. It is what it is.

And I'm not sure the Scots will vote to leave if given a 2nd referendum, if they do, good luck to them (genuinely) and the same with Ireland although that is a far more difficult situation as we all know and I wish nothing but peace and harmony there.

I would like to know what the result of the vote would be if the English were given the vote as to the union, it would be fascinating given the result of the EU referendum.

Someone said to me today that England should leave the UK and thus the EU leaving Scotland, Wales and NI still in the EU.

As funny as it sounds, it seems to make sense.

Personally sick to death of wee Jimmie Crankie popping up every five minutes bleeding on about an Independent Scotland free from Westminster, we let them vote, let them fuck off, re-join Europe and Westminster stops the funding north of the border on the day they leave the Union. Yeah you want to go alone..... well financially stand on your own two feet....

Official statistics show that over the period July to September a total of 2,547,000 people were in employment, an increase of 16,000 on the previous quarter.

I'm sure those 2.5 million working can make up the shortfall of the £54 billion you get....
Ungrateful dower sad fucking shower of shit.

And you can stick your fucking Hagis up your arse while your at it...

They aren't the same thing. The only danger to the EU is Le Pen winning in France.

The Euro is an unsustainable project. It will go soon one way or another.

I've always been told that NI is too small to exist by itself. I have never heard that rationale behind it so perhaps there isn't any. Monaco seems to be okay by itself.

Well I came on to say something sensible. But I can't now. That has creased me up. :1: :19:

col8 has a way with words but I must admit, I sometimes wish he'd come off the fence and really let us know what he thinks!

What I don't get is why people want to leave Europe but are angry when Scotland might want to leave our union.

It maybe explains why some find us English somewhat arrogant!

The choice is theirs.
