The Douglas Luiz Thread

Once Kamara has returned we'll have midfield options of Tielemens, Onana, Barkley and Kamara. That's not even including SJM who can slot in anywhere.

That's as strong a group of midfielders as I've ever seen in a Villa squad. Add the fact that we've 2 top class strikers, some brilliant attacking options and 2 top class LBs. It's only really RB and CB where we're lacking and if Mings can hit the ground running then CB is taken care of for at least this season. RB is where we need to upgrade but if Cash can stay fit he'll more than do for now.

Personally I think Monchi and the recruitment team gave done a good job improving the squad depth whilst trying to balance the financial rules.

It's a monumental ask for Kamara to come back at the level he was performing however his return could knock .25 goals per game against off our numbers. A fully fit Kamara helps us cap that back toward 1 goal per game against.

I agree to a certain extent. However CDM is not near our most pressing need for improvement currently. Our limited budget needs spending elsewhere IMO.
Probably not for this thread but I think clubs have to upgrade any player if there is a chance, because with this stupid transfer window malarky, you have to improve when you can where you can.
We didn't need Youri last season but what a godsend it turned out to get him for free and now he's untouchable this season. If we;d tried to buy a player like him to replace Dougie he would have been 50m. We got him at the right price ie free but at the wrong moment but how bloody well its worked out.

Things are about to get more interesting in terms of who plays in midfield with Kamara back. Onana, Kamara and Barkley all offer something different assuming our regular MOTM Tielemans is nailed on.

Youri wasn’t fit enough at the start of last season. It also took him a while to soak up Unai’s requirements. But yeah, he’s proved his class and his doubters wrong this season.

Hopefully we haven’t even started to see the best of Onana and Maatsen yet. I’m guessing they’ll be fully up to speed by Xmas. Barkley has also proved a revelation. Loving what Villa are doing and how they are easing players into the system.

I was just using him as an example we didn't NEED Maatsen we needed a right back but we took Maatsen because he was going spare. If we only replaced the weakest link every season we'd very likely not get the players we wanted and end up replacing none.

Anyway, Dougie has gone and he won't be coming back
