The Conor Hourihane Thread

Making the assumption Barkley is direct competition for Hourihane - given the lad likes proving people wrong about what he can do and where his career will go - it's win, win for me as it forces him to further improve his game.

My only question about Barkley is which one are we getting? The lad who has shown how good he can be, or the one who looked like he'd stopped bothering to put the effort in unless it suited him?

It has to make Hourihane more determined for me.

Certainly valid questions on Barkley as I've voiced myself but as for Hourihane, there'll be no reaction from him - if he had any professional pride it would have made him break into a sprint at least one per season as it was. He'll just put his feet up even more if I'm any judge IMO.

Used to love it, but I then stopped being a teenager and every pint got heavier and heavier lol Have a memorial pint on Paddy's Day but I'm too old now.

The fact I didn't tag Dan into that worries me lol

Yeah I can only drink a one or 2, it's basically a meal.

I wonder does Conor drink it in pints or in cans? (you won't see me getting blamed for going off topic lol)

I'm always blamed for going off topic.

So to rectify that.

Hourihane might drink Guinness? (when he's not playing obviously, you can't put freekicks like that away if down with the black stuff).

I actually doubt he drinks at all, he's way too lean. Heroin maybe?

McGinn looks more like he'd down a few Guinness's. Probably does it on the way to matches.

Missed a gilt edge chance in 90th minute to win it for Ireland. In Conor’s defence it was on his right but he’ll be upset about it. Took and scored his penalty though

Seeing Conors name pop up in various threads, he must be the most divisive player we've had in a long time.

I'm somewhere in the middle with him really. We all know his limitations, he doesn't even stand out in the worst Irish team I've ever seen.

But he's still capable of playing a full 90 mins in the Premier League, against certain opposition, Newcastle last season for example, he won that game for us.

The only real problem with him I have is if he has the hump because he's been dropped. Surely he can't be that delusional?

The problem you get with such a debated player is they become like marmite. So you lose perspective, because you’re arguing he’s better than he is or worse than he is.

The reality is he’s probably where you’re at with him. I lean more towards “bad” because his all round game is undoubtably poor. If it wasn’t for set pieces and composure around the box he’d never get a look in in this league.

He’s done well to get to this level and I take my hat off to him for that. But he has to accept that he’s in the big time and squads are there to be used and rotated. It’s about doing what’s right for the team, and if he doesn’t like it I’m surely Barnsley will be glad to take him back but on a third of his current wages. He’s a professional, not a Sunday league players who’s got out of bed to run the line.

I prefer a player who gets frustrated at being dropped/subbed to someone like Lansbury who is happy to sit in the background taking a wage for nothing. He’s not causing trouble in the dressing room so I don’t see it’s a problem at all

Yep, totally, also can't say for sure if he does have an issue, just going off people saying he didn't celebrate goals recently etc. but who can really read into that kind of thing?

Deano has said he's disappointed at being dropped, but in the past he's always come back and done something, so if he starts tomorrow I expect a 30 yard rocket into the top corner.

If he does play, there should be a huge emphasis on winning free kicks around the box. I know it's obvious and other teams would be aware, but that should give more opportunity for the likes of Jack or Ross or whoever to have a shot from distance.

It seems to be Southamptons new thing all of a sudden with Ward Prowse.

At the moment he still has a place in our squad but by next season he needs to be completely out of contention else it means we've simply not moved on. Our first 11 is pretty good and can give any team a game if they're on form. Our bench has a distinct championship flavour to it.

Time to move on from Conor with a thank you for his contribution in stabilising us, helping us gain promotion, some really key goals along the way and THAT goal against the Baggies . But last night epitomised him at this level. The game bypasses him, dangerous from free kicks but if not successful at those contributes nothing and we simply are nowhere near good enough to allow us the luxury of including someone just because he is a decent set piece player . Weak in the midfield battle and unable to influence the game. That fanny like header attempt in the first half
