It won't be long until the hilarious media script of the comic-opera season starts to play out. Anyone who enjoyed such educational programs as, 'The Goon Show,' 'Fawlty Towers,' 'Monty Python,' or 'Blackadder,' has to enjoy the brilliant bi-annual farces known as Transfer Windows. Day after day various media outlets will do their utmost to think up the most ridiculous, comical, partly true, mostly false, semi-believable, unbelievable, inconceivable, 'facts' relating to everything Football that they can invent .... and then do their utmost to convince what are, to them, the gullible supporters, that they are all true.
The signs that the media are warming up to the more serious articles soon to come are already floating around to whet our appetites. Its Transfer Window foreplay designed, strategically, to soften us up and cause us to question our own powers of cognitive thinking. It's been quite successful in the past so the thinking is, when you're on to a good thing ....! Of course the media are not alone in presenting such farces for our enjoyment. There are many expert pundits (well that's how they describe themselves) who happily jump on the bandwagon and attempt to keep the ride going for as long as possible. They must be experts because they are really good at this.
A summary of how it will all play out is fairly predictable. Every one of Tottenham's stars will be leaving for a 'bigger' club. Every player in the known universe (and beyond) who do not currently play for Tottenham will be in 'talks' with the club pending their imminent arrival. The media operates on the main premise that, if it's all written down, people will believe it must be true. Yes? Well, it works for the Bible, Quran, Dictionary, Noddy, Marvel comics, and a host of other good books.
The ploy to grab the most readers and feed the media vanities is not subtle. After all they've had years of practice with world news in general. Give them half-truths, play on their fears, and confirm that what they want is what they will receive. Keep them unsure. Keep them guessing. Sow the seeds of content and discontent, allude to things that are beyond proving, light the blue touch paper, stand clear and let the multitude's anguished frenzy begin.
It's all good fun really. Can't wait! How about you?
