The Carabao Cup Thread

Special mention must go to the clown with the whistle last night. Shockingly inept performance from him. How he managed to book two of ours for innocuous fouls (first ones) , but let a couple of their cloggers commit multiple fouls without a card was ridiculous. Also I didn't realise deliberate hand ball isn't a bookable offence anymore.

I don't know where they drag these buffoons up from.
I’m sure he thought about sending off Bogarde for a second foul after giving him a yellow card moments earlier. Villa player yellow card - always at risk of a second and sent off. Brentford player - keep fouling and kicking away. How he didn’t book Collins for blocking that ball with his arm was a joke. Alan Smith the chunt was backing the decision aswell - he was unbearable as a pundit - he seemed choked up when Villa got the lucky first goal.

Arguably should have had two pens first half as well. I see the pundits thought he got those decisions wrong too. When you’re struggling like we are, crap refereeing decisions certainly don’t help!

The ref could have given us a couple of penalties but putting them away would have been no better than a 50/50 chance going by that comedy of errors. The style of football isn’t helping either.
Matty Cash was by no means the worst culprit but this reluctance to go past defenders on the wings is narrowing the play down and making it easy for the opposition to marshal their blocks.
Square and backwards is the pattern.
I keep harking back to those semi finals against Everton when we took the piss out of them for continuously passing the ball back to the keeper.
Pass the ball back
Pass the ball back
Pass the ball back Everton,

The thing that bothers me the most is when we get stuck in a rut. Unai decides Cash should play as a RWer, and he drops the RCM (Bogie or Kamara) into RCB to form a back three. Not sure why but when results turn Unai has gone to that system a bunch of times.

I really just want him to try playing 433 for a change and flipping the 3-2 build-up to a 2-3 build-up. The great irony is that Unai is a spanish manager who refutes the ways of 433 which is basically their universal formation. Single pivot and wingers but Unai plays double pivot and no wingers.

Unai will get time and he'll figure something out but I'd like him to try something thats a bit more risk on and builds on the one area of strength and depth we actually do have which is Central Midfield.

Should rename this 'The September Thread'
Yes. At the moment it’s looking like Black September. Fans want the feel good factor that Unai has given us to return. I’m as guilty as anyone as looking at the present situation through dark glasses. I know things will improve but can’t see how at the moment. I’m hoping that Unai can get the spirit that he instilled in the team ,when he first came, back and firing again. Maybe it’s a shift of emphasis, maybe it’s finding the right combinations. Maybe, as CDX says ,it’s simply a change of system.

I'd like to see Teilemans, Kamara and Onana in a more conventional 433 midfield. Kamara can sit deeper and let Onana be the box to box man.

We would have gotten our man United cup game this season if either of us were any good.... Brentford to play Grimsby in last 16 of league cup
