The personal tax allowance will go up to £10,000 in 2014 - a year earlier than the government had promised. It means that since the Coalition came to power the allowance will have risen over £3,500. It's a huge boon for millions of hard-pressed families, and will save a typical family £700 a year in tax.

What of the £10,000 personal tax allowance? Don't be deceived by boasting that this is aimed at the lowest paid. The Resolution Foundation shows three quarters of the relief goes to the top half of households, while workers on low pay gain just 32p a week.

32p a week is £16.64 a year.
Not to be sniffed at !
That would buy them 16 cheese burgers from MaccyD`s,which they could eat all at once whilst watching a rerun of Jeremy Kyle`s best hits .
