Was the clear error simply that the refereecouldnt see the wood for trees, and needed a different angle to actually see it?
Several viewings then to ensure he made the decision he deemed correct.
 
I think that VAR had its good points but is still very much a work in progress. Let's not forget that for a large proportion of the referees it was the first time they had encountered it as it is not used in many leagues across the globe. I had the impression that if the ref was advised to review it on the side of the pitch that unduly influenced their thought process before they looked at the footage as I think I can only recall once where the ref was strong enough to stick to their first decision. I think in future the referees will become more confident in the VAR and their own decisions
