As we live here I have to say I agree. We arte the hub linking the north to the midlands and south. Not as big as a city (though classed as) and not as small as a village, York is the only place I would live in The U.K

Are there a lot of high paying jobs in York?

Usually, the reason people move to and can never move away from (despite constantly talking about it) London is because of the salaries there.

It was Solihull 2 years ago, and in second place last year.

Well presumably it was all of Solihull, which, of course, includes Shirley. :17:

Not especially BB: Its a tourist city so alot of work is seasonal and in hospitality. We are ofcourse a university city which brings in money too.

There is no real industry here. Part of Rowntrees left and that is it. British sugar, the railways and the like are long gone.

Property prices are high here unless you live in a village on the outskirts. Even then they are higher than average around Yorkshire. Alot of people commute to work in Leeds and surrounding cities.

There are higher paid jobs in the York area as there is still a reasonable amount of academic work in the city.

Our eldest works as a software devoloper on £40 k a year which still without his wife's inheritance towards a deposit would have struggled to get a mortgage even with our DiL wage too.

Having said that I know it is about 5 times today the income rather than 3 times when I bought my first property with the ex in the 80's/90's.

So he probably would have got a mortgage however fortunately the girl he met means they have a very small mortgage today by standards. There mortgage is less than a £100 k

Actually, it was reported on BBC Breakfast Time, it was Shipston on Stour.

Didn't pay that much attention to it, but it'll come around again a bit later I'm sure.
