The Army

Vital Football Legend
Some interesting points were made in the concessions thread before it was closed. There was one post along the lines of 'You'd better appreciate the Army. If we didn't have one, then you'd know.' I'd love to hear more on that.

Just in case anyone is confused, I'm not having a go at the Army. Lots of Vital Villans have served with honour and the Army provides opportunities for thousands of young men. Hopefully, this thread will be a discussion on the role of armies in the modern world.

What's the purpose of the British Army? If it was national defence, surely Britain's nuclear arsenal has that covered. The prospect of an invasion is so minute it's almost laughable and the wars that Britain is engaged in all seem to be self made. So what's the point of the Army?

They are cannon fodder for the illegal actions of our government, their lives cheaply given away in the pursuit of power and resources.

We've lost too many fathers, sons and brothers backing up America in it's quest to take over the world.

Even though the army is shrinking alarmingly, it's nice to know there is a little bit left as a gesture of warning/defiance to any would be's.

It will also come in useful for any internal uprisings in the future.

I met a guy at a birthday party recently who is a senior rank in one of the battalions. He was saying that the budget cuts have left us as a defence force only.

He was very bitter it has to be said.

I guess the Tories don't see the point of it either. The Americans must be happy to fight their wars alone now.

I suppose you could argue that the countries with the largest armies are the most paranoid -

1 People's Republic of China 2,285,000
2 United States of America 1,429,995
3 India 1,325,000
4 Democratic People's Republic of Korea 1,106,000
5 Russian Federation 1,040,000
6 Republic of Korea 687,000
7 Turkey 664,060
8 Pakistan 617,000
9 Iran 523,000
10 Egypt 468,500

Britain - 156,940

That's in terms of man power (according to Wikipedia), but the British armed forces will be better trained than say, North Korea, who will probably know very little about actual fighting strategy, they probably know how to march, fire a gun and duck behind a wall, whereas the British Armed Forces are sophistically trained.

In terms of philosophy, I think we need a big enough army to have a decent defence of our own country, but I think we should have enough troops to support a campaign, should a just one arise, and not sacrifice our defence, is it not better to be prepared?

Brave men and women. I will forever salute them.

Cowardly politicians, I will forever curse them.

Love the Beautiful South song.

You're fight them on the beaches speeches
make me despair
If there's one thing you can guarantee
is you will not be there!

The most the armed forces ask for is to be funded to be able to do the job in hand, most people think of conflict but recently when the Somerset Levels flooded it was HM Forces who came to the rescue of many members of the public, farmers. Air Rescue helos, troops at the coal face lugging sand bags supporting the local councils/water authorities etc. Who turned up at the Olympics after G4S made a complete fucking shambles of the security? Yep HM Forces no moaning just get in and do the job as they always do.

Theres a thing called MACA Millitary Aid to Civil Authorities the Armed Forces are always ready in a crisis to support the public.

Its a bitter pill to swallow when they have to start buying their own kit because the government provide substandard kit or theres not enough kit to go around, not enough bullet proof vests? WTF

If you want an Army, Navy and the others please government pay for it, dont try to get these people on the cheap, already pissing around with their pensions if things keep going we will not have any Armed Forces because no one will want to join it.

Always remember during the first Iraq war a mate used to send my Villa Times to a soldier over there. Used to get updates back about rifles not working correctly because of the sand, boots melting etc and then just how well kitted out and equipped the USA soldiers were.

Think Jonah was over there at that time wasn't he?

My dad said the same all those years ask when he was in the marines, they had to go on a us military camp at one stage and couldn't believe the standard of food and equipment etc compared to the swill they got.

It is one thing sending these brave folks to war, it is an altogether different thing sending them badly equipped.

Isn't it just. You'd think that the poor lads would turn their guns on the bastards who send them out there poorly equipped.
