Tempus fugit

Do these guys or their agents think they can do better elsewhere with teams all over the place cutting their budgets like crazy? For example, Hadler could be sitting in the pound seats if Holy continues his good form and gets snapped up in the January window.

If the shoe was on the other foot, you'd definitely wait to see if any better offers came along, be it money or duration, before signing.

Plus, in someone like Byrne's case, 29 and just having won player of the season, his stock will probably never be higher, and will need to get the absolute best deal possible before age begins to catch up.

Exactly, I think some people forget players have their own careers, lives and families to worry about.

Oldaker’s biggest wish this summer will be to play as many games as possible at the highest level possible next season. If that means dropping down a level or two that might work out well in the long run.

Byrne’s considerations are more likely to be financial given his age and previous comments that he would like to stay for the right deal. An extra £200 a week for the next two years will add £15k to his savings once his football career is over. I certainly don’t think you can begrudge him weighing up his options or expect him to make a snap decision to sign up again. Byrne won’t be first on any teams’ wish lists but I imagine he will be on a few clubs’ radars especially when their own picture becomes clearer as to which of their own players accept contract offers. Good luck to him.

I don't begrudge anyone moving on for an extra year in a contract or a few bob more in wages and you're right about Byrne but are the places out there?

ditto Wayne !

I have no truck with any player weighing up his options but it must be time limited to suit the employer.

Just imagine if you were offered a new job.
Well done says your new prospective employer, when can you start?

Err! Can I take four or five weeks to think about it ????

I don't think so somehow.

If any player can do better for their family elsewhere, then absolutely good luck to them, but not at the potential expense of our squad.

SL may well have a Byrne replacement in mind so needs a decision either way.

Yep set a deadline and move on either way.

Slightly concerning was the Lovell implied that he doesn't need many more. Well I hope the Charlton and AFCW bloke hit the ground running otherwise we look light in quality to me.

I don't reckon on that. Whilst he might want Byrne for 'back-up' the players he has signed for midfield could make the midfield of last year redundant!

Football / team sports are so far removed from other jobs in this respect though so the comparison is very misleading. In not immediately accepting their contract offers our players aren’t exactly out of keeping with their peers are they?

I assume as it stands the players won’t be earning anything until they sign a contract. They must feel it’s a gamble worth taking.

Reckon he’d probably spend the extra cash on some more tattoos, private number plates and some bigger rims for the car.

But agree with the sentiment. Is there anyone on this forum who would turn down a pay rise?

Probably not but then we've lost good players too soon because they were only given 12 months instead of the requested 18 or 24.
