Technical help thread

I don't know if this will get used, however I thought it was worth putting up. With techno Geeks (just kidding) and those of us who have screamed ranted and raved (or at least I have) at our laptops/virtual word when problems hit I thought it might be a useful topic for people to put advice in of problems they have solved, problems experiencing for help or just in general.

Whilst on holiday my audio stopped working, my control panel went blank and my full package of AVG, the firewall decided to error. Four hours later (well spent over 4 nights one hour per night, as we were away)I finally managed to sort it. I couldn't believe the problem either.

The very thing supposed to protect me, caused the bloody problem. My AVG decided it would stop windows updates. As soon as I took them off block and rebooted viola problem solved.

God couldn't be everywhere so he gave us Google and providing your careful and don't download shit from their and just look for answers to problems it is amazing what I have learnt.

Always have my lads as a back up, however when they both inconveniently left home at the same time 3 years ago I had to learn fast how to sort stuff.

Now I would rather do it myself as the lads just sigh and moan. Only ask if I am really stuffed.

Kef I dumped AVG years ago and use Microsoft Security Essentials

If you think you may have a virus or picked up something on the net you can do a scan using their Free Safety Scanner.

I use MSE all the time and if the computer feels like something wrong I use the scanner to check it out, I will also add I keep my windows updated.

You can upgrade to Windows 10 for free as well.

Would never touch AVG. It's far too sensitive. Caused a few people issues on here a few years ago, they changed package and issue ended.

I pay for mine, Norton, find the system impeccable and without tempting fate been clear of problems for years.

just giving it a try

I used to use Avast, until someone told me it's pirate software :33:

I agree Col. I've been using it for years. You hardly know it's there. No slow down or hogging of resources.

Just be aware, it's called Windows Defender in Windows 8 (and presumably 10). It's the same program, and is pre-installed.

One other useful program is Malwarebytes. It picks up some malware that virus checkers don't. I scan each machine every 6 months or so with it. Just be careful when installing that you get the free version, and you UNCHECK the box on the last dialog of the installation saying you want a trial of their ongoing scanning. It blocks too many things, and is not needed.

I still use AVG and its been ok for me. Also use it on my mobile phone.

I have another technical question though. Just started using Chrome on my work laptop after I had to rebuild it following my had drive being wiped, and I keep getting those fecking annoying "aawwwww snap.." error messages, especially on Vital (might just notice it more on here coz I'm on here more).

Any ideas?

I have Norton and it is brilliant tbh, been using it for about years now and never had a virus issue (i think), been reading this thread but wasn't sure what it was about as never used AVG, now after reading the posts i understand!

Try unchecking Use hardware acceleration (Settings> Show Advanced Settings > System menu). If that doesn't work, let me know.

Cheers mate, have given it a go. Need to be careful with what settings I fiddle with though as the application i support has a very specific supported setup, but think that should be ok.

No problem Deano. That setting shouldn't affect too much. It causes a few problems, and most users end up having to turn it off.

Hope it works for you.

Good info too Heath

I suppose I am lucky having 2 sons who are in the IT/software industry and another son who is very good at all this stuff however it never ceases to amaze me how many people don't have the basics on their laptop, no anti virus, no clues of what can happen, defragging, keeping the system sorted and just downloading something that says its free and wonder why they end up with problems. I say I am lucky cos I have ''grown up'' haha with them teaching me telling me stuff.

I have sorted quite a few laptops out over they years and set them up properly for friends. Tonight I have been setting up my close friend new laptop. I have her old laptop here to transfer pictures etc. and I am stunned by the mess of it.

She is getting a tutorial before she gets it back
