Team that doesn’t pull up trees vs Forest

However the boring fannying about at the back comes because there is no movement or out ball up field.
Teams set up to defend well
We fanny about and give other teams even more time to organise their defence.
Our player are scared to give up the ball, run forward or attack. As a result they pass back.

We need a forward.
We would mostly feel better if we won a few games.

Be fair Formby. I don't think there's anyone (even me) who's saying that what's been served up is anywhere near good enough.

For me, it's been good enough in parts ... in some games ... but even when we went through our unbeaten run, conceding bugger all, I think we can all acknowledge that we a) weren't creating enough goalscoring chances, and b) weren't converting a sufficient number of those we did create.

With regard to his best XI, I can fully understand why he often changes the team (over and above injuries and suspensions) ... cos let's face it, simply from looking at the post match assessments on here, not too many get a glowing report. Personally, the only change that puzzled me was when he left out Carragher. At the time, I kind of got that Carragher isn't the right wing back he wants (though both Ramsay and Sibbick have still to show that they are) but the lad rarely had a poor game. Few of the midfield and forwards though have done enough - consistently - to say that they should be the first name on the team sheet. So ... not knowing his first choice XI? ... understandable really.

The issue is whether we are prepared to let Maloney have more time ... time to find his best XI, time to fix the problems we all see (and he acknowledges in interviews) and time to deliver on the targets he stated at the start of the season.

For reasons I've already stated, personally, I am. I understand the view of some of those who aren't, but given that some (hi Frank) have been calling for him to go for the past 12 months, I have to ask how long it would be before they call for his successor to be kicked out too.
I'm completely happy to give him more time. I accept that when we play well, we are really good. My issue is that we do not play well anywhere nearly often enough.....

And do you really think what is being served up week after week is anywhere good enough? If you do, I think you are leading the sad existence, not me…….
No it's not been good but what do you expect when we've virtually no budget?
People need to realise that this is likely to be the position for a long time and get behind a squad that tries but has limited ability,As long as the players are giving 100 percent they deserve support not continual criticism

A mid table budget doesn’t equate to virtually none.

This January Window is our last chance
to avoid relegation, and get some players in who can score goals as this team we have at present is not scoring enough goals to keep us in L1.

I've seen our club on much less a budget and with a much smaller squad of worse players playing at a much lower level but could still enjoy a match win lose or draw on many occasions over the years. It's not really about the players giving one hundred percent Tommy, it's about the type of football the poor sods are being asked to play by Shaun
Too much passing out from the back, too many backwards and sideways passes, less dribbling of the ball, less taking on the oppositions defences, less urgency and too turgid a pace. Throw ins going backwards, less long balls, wingers not going to byline and crossing, one striker, defensive midfielders and too many changes. All of this shite is not in our so called DNA and it's all of this shite that is nothing to do with budgets one little bit.

Agreed. It’s the worst football I’ve seen in over 30 years of watching Latics. At the minute I go because I feel I have to rather than looking forward to it and getting some enjoyment from it.

Fabulous post Jeff.
Even if we think back beyond Paul Jewell, the players may not have been technically better, but were allowed to play to their strengths and tried to score goals and tried to win games.
Forgetting all the superstars we always mention, the likes of Bryan Griffiths, Pat Gavin, Andy Lyons, Steve Johnson, Steve Senior, Jeff Wright, Kevin Langley, Peter Houghton, Noel Ward and Colin Methven to name just a few always gave their all and must be shaking their heads with embarrassment when they see our current group of players being ruined by this mon in charge.
If he relented from playing the shit he tells them to play and gets rid of the shit loan players and signs some players that actually want to be at WAFC things might just change.

Even in the days of Bill Kenyon we had better teams than this. Absolutely loads of non league teams around here. To look at. John Butler Bryan Griffiths. Peter Houghton Barry Knowles Plus a lot more. They are out there but we would rather look at stats. For some kid from Brentford Nots forrest Fulham etc. or some from Utd who will probably finish up,playing for FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER.

Appears the goals have been hiding with the reserves.

Any players worth considering? I haven't watched the u21s.
Now there is a thing that would benefit football and thats a return to a reserve side playing regular football. A regular best 11and a reserve team playing regular games.

Tommy, I understand the point however, Wycombe who were a dour mid table team last season (they usually are) currently sit top of the table and have scored 32 goals ..easily the highest in the Division.
Of course they may or may not stay there but a tremendous showing so far …and they have spent nowt in transfer fees ..,I’ve barely heard of any of their players (other than Udoh) …Kone their chief striker was picked up last January from those non league giants Newham.

What budget do they have would you guess ?

Last season Stevenage made a fair fist of it before falling away at the end …on gates of less than 3,000 …what was their budget ?

It shows what can be done with astute recruitment without spending anything on fees and you can only assume relatively little on wages, provided you know what you’re signing with a specific style of play in mind.

This is what we are missing.

I’m still behind the manager (just) but he absolutely must settle his selection policy down and stop the sheer scale of game to game changes that currently scream “I’m really not sure what to do”

We need a proven finisher in January and set up to ‘play to him’ …from a largely settled line up.
