Team for Newcastle

Come on then who plays V Newcastle? Just over 2 weeks away, unlikely anyone will be signed before then and go straight in the team now.

Our team is looking terribly short in a few positions, how we have allowed this to happen is an absolute joke.

:26:

The team will be strong but the bench may not be. Assuming Rose and Son aren't quite ready, I would start with Lloris; Trippier, Toby, Jan, Davies; Dier, Wanyama; Alli, Dembele, Eriksen; Kane. The alternative is to drop Dier into a back 3 and then play Dembele deeper with Wanyama.

The Prem better be ready for Kane hitting 5 or 6 goals in July / August !!!

Team is strong but it will be considerably weaker than what it was last season. No Walker and no Rose or Son to start the season.

We either have to play someone out of position (Dembele/Dier) or we will have Sissoko or N'Koudou starting, who would have guessed that at the end of last season.

Transfer windows are rarely good for us but I can't get over how bad this summer has been.

Lloris
Trippier - Dier - Toby - Jan - Davies
Wanyama - Dembele
Eriksen - Dele
Kane

Subs: Vorm, Wimmer, KWP, Winks, Onomah, GKN, Janssen.

I'm not sure where the weakness is, apart from lack of experience on the bench. It's pretty much the team we ended the season with just with Dembele back bossing the midfield. Son will be a loss and Walker will be missed, of course, but it's still a very strong side with another season of top experience under their belts. Also, players like Dele, Eriksen and Kane were struggling for form in pre-season and the start of last season but at the moment they all look sharp.

I wonder how soon into the season we will see Lamela and Rose return as well. The only real question-marks for me are whether we retain Wimmer or Sissoko. I hope we keep Wimmer and give him more chances this season but Sissoko needs to go.

5 defenders and 2 CM's, the full backs ain't even wing backs. If Walker & Rose were in that team it wouldn't be so bad but that team just doesn't cut it for me, as for the bench :10: we've had all summer to address the issues in the squad and we've done nothing apart from strengthen a rival, winds me up so much

Scotty, seriously, both the full backs do play overlapping wingplay and push high up the pitch whenever they can and press in the oppo's corners, so I don't know how you can say they aren't wingbacks - what you could say is they aren't 'fast' wingbacks, but you might also say that both display a greater level of intelligence to their game.

The issue will be how we adjust to the counter and who will be responsible for cover when we're pressing high up the pitch.

I see no reason for your pessimism as of now, but maybe after the Newcastle game you can say 'I told you so'...

Personally, I think we'll beat them, but I'll be more interested in seeing how we manage to keep a clean sheet.

Yeah ok fair enough, fast wingbacks. If either get caught upfield they are unlikely to get back, which is why Rose & Walker are so good at it.

Like I've said I got no issue with our team but our squad has been clearly lacking for a long time and this still ain't addressed. I think we will beat Newcastle but still doesn't address the issues, we will be exposed against the better team as the season goes on and in the CL, unless we sign 2-3 players very soon!

I'd rather 2 at the back and give N'koudo his starting place after a whole season of mental and physical preparations. If we aren't going to give him a chance now we might as well sell him.

2 at the back for me, with GKN as the 3rd AM, he's the only fit player with pace in our squad.

If we play 3 at the back it does cover Trippier and Davies' lack of pace compared to Rose and Walker. Going forward Trippier is a far better playmaker than Walker and actually suits Dele and Kane's late bursts into the box (that's what she said.)

The more we free up Dele, Eriksen and Kane to do their thing up top, the easier we win. We found that out last season. Sonny and Lamela's injuries have opened up a chance for GKN to make a claim for a spot. I don't deny that we still lack strength in depth, but we are pretty much starting the season with the team that ended the last, just minus Sonny. There are positives to take from that situation.

They were garbage when we got spanked 5-1 to them! lol

Players had downed tools plus they got rid of all their half decent players. I cant see us losing more than 2 games to sides lower than the top 6 this season. Everton and higher is where we will win or lose the league.

I bet we lose (or at least draw) quite a few at Wembley this season, it will be a lot of teams 'cup finals' so to speak.

I believe we are in the top 2 of the fittest teams, probably number one. It will take a lot of energy for the lower sides to keep us out at wembley. I dont think it will affect us to much as people think.

Hope you're right, no way will we be as strong as were at WHL so we're going to have to improve our away form to come anywhere near as close to the top that's for sure.

I agree.

Last year we lost to Monaco and Leverkusen in the CL and Chelsea in the FA. If you listen to some you'd reckon we lost to Championship teams.

We will learn and improve.

Losing to Chelsea and Monaco fair enough (although we shouldn't accept losing to anyone and they ain't exactly amongst the best teams in the world) but Leverkusen are an average German team who finished 12th in Bundesliga and their best player has just moved to West Ham! Don't forget the draw V Gent (Championship team) :19:

We will struggle there, no doubt about it, just hope it ain't as bad as I fear.

I don't think Wimmer will be here - I imagine as the VVD move heats up Southampton/Palace will start to chase him harder
