The odd kick-off time is to draw attention to BHF awareness campaign of Every Minute Matters in performing life saving CPR heart resuscitation and urging fans to learn the skills.
Next game we play a club in huge difficulties, Sheffield Wednesday. They were placed into administration and hit with a 12-point penalty last October after months of turmoil.Then to compound matters, last December they were deducted a further 6 points and Dejphon Chansiri prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL Club for a period of three years for failure on multiple occasions to pay players and staff on time.
Deja vu for them as in 2020 the club received a 12-point deduction over accounting relating to the sale of their Hillsborough ground to owner Chansiri's Sheffield 3 business. Those 12 points were reduced to six on appeal, but they suffered relegation to League One in 2020-21 season.
In 2021-22 season they missed out on promotion, losing to Sunderland in the play-off final.
In 2022-23 season they gained promotion via the play-offs after beating Barnsley in the final.
2023-24 finished 20th
2024-25 finished 12th
Presently they are rooted at the bottom of the table on -7 points, with 6 straight defeats behind them and their captain Barry Bannan having just left for Millwall. You can’t help but feel sorry for their long suffering fans and for such a big club steeped in great history.
But all that is brushed aside as we look for another home win and three points.
Our own Gary Monk was appointed manager of the Owls on 6 Sep 2019, replacing Steve Bruce, and was there for 14 months before being sacked on 9 Nov 2020. They had began the season with a 12-point penalty reduced to six as mentioned, and were second from bottom in the Championship, level on points with bottom club Derby, having won 3 and drawn 3 of their 11 matches that season.
Their present manager is Henrik Pedersen who took over from Danny Röhl when he left last July after a fall out with Chansiri.
Last Saturday they lost 0-1 at home to Wrexham in front of 23,000 fans, amazing support not having won at home this season.
We meet up again with ex-Swan Jamal Lowe, who’s having a tough time of it in a struggling team with 2 goals in 23 matches.
It’s always difficult playing against the struggling sides and we just hope there’s no complacency from the players for this one. I’m sure Vitor will not allow that to happen anyway.
