Swansea v Plymouth League Cup Round 2 Tue 26 Aug 19:45

After a convincing win over Crawley in the last round, albeit missing so many chances, this evening we entertain another League One side Plymouth, recently relegated from the Championship. Although ending up only four points from safety and scoring the same number of goals as Swansea, conceding too many goals was their downfall, with 88 conceded, the worst record of all the teams. Main transfer out was centre-forward Ryan Hardie to Wrexham. Transfers in included our own Jamie Paterson, I wonder if he’ll come back to haunt us as so many other of our ex-players have done.

We made seven changes against Crawley so expect a similar rotation of the squad for this one.

Eight changes for Swans, Jamie Paterson injured for Argyle

Swansea City: Andy Fisher, Sam Parker, Kaelan Casey, Cameron Burgess (c), Josh Tymon, Marko Stamenić, Jay Fulton, Melker Widell, Zeidane Inoussa, Jisung Eom, Žan Vipotnik.

Subs: Paul Farman, Josh Key, Ben Cabango, Malick Yalcouye, Goncalo Franco, Liam Cullen, Bobby Wales, Ethan Galbraith, Ollie Cooper.

Plymouth Argyle: Luca Ashby-Hammond, Brendan Wiredu, Joe Edwards (c), Alex Mitchell, Owen Oseni, Bradley Ibrahim, Caleb Roberts, Bim Pepple, Matthew Sorinola, Joe Hatch, Tegan Finn.

Subs: Zak Baker, Lorent Tolaj, Bali Mumba, Ayman Benarous, Caleb Watts, Malachi Boateng, Freddie Issaka, Joe Mwaro, Seb Campbell.

Fisher
Parker - Casey - Burgess - Tymon
Stamenic
Fulton - Widdel
Innousa - Vipotnik - Eom

Or will Sheehan change to a 4-2-3-1 and put Widdel at 10?

Fisher
Parker - Casey - Burgess - Tymon
Stamenic - Fulton
Innousa - Widdel - Eom
Vipotnik

Looks like the first shape with Stamenic as the lone poivot

Swans should be 1 up already, a poor dragged effort from Widdel after going through on goal

Poor start this, Plymouth able to control possession and they should have taken the lead there with the space they were allowed inside the box

I’d forgotten about him, the ex-Swan.
The hero then the villain! Matthew Sorinola ran the show for Plymouth. Every free-kick and corner he made our defence panic with his accurate and penetrating balls. He got the assist for their goal and was a thorn in our side all night until the penalty shoot out, where Fisher saved his shot.
In my opinion Plymouth were the better team on the night and deserved to go through.

I’m not willing to write Sheehan off but performances need to improve. We haven’t been awful so far this season but we’ve not seen anything close to a complete performance yet. We arguably should have won by more against SU and could have won the game late on against Watford. There is quality there and I’m hoping Stamenic at 6 can free up the 8s to get them in better attacking positions.

People say we have no identity but I think that’s wrong, the identity is based around off the ball work rather than on it. The vast majority of our attacking threat comes from out wide so having someone there who can get in the right positions is crucial for this team.

I think there is a version of this team that works and Sheehan deserves the time to get that right. However, we must improve and do it soon.

I’d hate to think we’ve backed the wrong man here.

A few shock results in the EFL Cup last night - Huddersfield beating Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on penalties, our next league opponents Sheffield Wednesday beating Leeds on penalties at Hillsborough and Stoke losing 0-3 at home to Bradford City. Luckily Swansea were not on that list.

The draw for Round Three of the EFL Cup will take place on Sky Sports at the end of their live coverage of Grimsby Town v Man Utd tonight.

EFL Cup Round Three
Swansea City v Nottingham Forest
A good draw for us, I wonder if the missing fans will turn up for this one.
Date to be finalised, either the week commencing September 15 or September 22
