Swansea v Millwall Sat 27 Sept 12:30

Our habit of conceding late goals (it’s nothing new) is hurting us badly and needs to be sorted out. We are not where we expected to be, sitting just three points off the bottom three after our second defeat of the season.

We are wide open on both wings, same problem as under previous managers, and full-backs Key and Tymon seem incapable of stopping crosses.

We’ve conceded 5 goals in our 6 league games:

Tymon:

Middlesbrough 1-0 - 51’ Fry outmuscled Tymon as he met Morgan Whittaker's corner with a firm header

Key:

Watford 1-1 (Hornets draw after six straight away defeats) -

35’ fouled by Key, Irankunda whipped the free kick over the Swansea wall to score.

Key, Tymon:

Hull 2-2 (Tigers draw after losing previous two games)-

45’ with Key out of position, Giles out wide races upfield unhindered to cross for McBurnie to score.

97’ Tymon beaten out wide by Akintola who crosses for Egan to score.

Tymon:

Birmingham 1-0 (Blues win after losing previous two games) -

94’ Roberts beats Tymon out wide and crosses for Dykes to head home.

Millwall are a point behind us in the table and have drawn and lost their last two games, same as us.

Millwall’s head-coach is former Preston, Sunderland and Stoke boss Alex Neil since Dec 24 after Neil Harris departed.

In the corresponding fixture last October, Azeem beat Tymon out wide and crossed for Casper de Norre to score a 90th minute winner to give Millwall their first away win of the season.

Millwall leapfrog us in the table and we drop to 11th place, they are two points ahead of us, after their 1-0 home win over Watford tonight.
Ex-Swan Steven Benda (on loan from Fulham) was in goal for the Lions and had a good game.
McCauley Langstaff came on as sub with ten minutes to go. We were linked with signing him last summer but Millwall beat us to it. He scored one goal last season for them and has one goal this season so far. Langstaff holds the goal scoring record of 42 goals in the National League with Notts County in 22-23 season and 28 goals in League One 23-24 season with them before his move to Millwall, where the goals subsequently dried up.

Swansea 1 (Vipotnik 12’) - Millwall 1 (Coburn 46’)

The good news, Vipotnik scores again, the bad news another soft goal conceded in added time for the fourth game in a row.

We are not taking our chances and look weak on the counter. Both full backs having poor games with our flanks being exposed. We couldn’t handle Millwall’s robust play and they were aided by the ref who allowed them to continuously foul.

We started off so brightly, same as last week, and could have scored another few but then vulnerability at the back cost us once again. Three Swansea players surrounded Coburn and he was still able to score after the ball was headed back across goal from a set-piece. Poor second-half where both teams had chances to win it. Two penalty shouts but the ref wasn’t having it and Inoussa hitting the post. Idah had the ball in the net after dispossessing Benda as he parried Vipotnik’s shot but was adjudged to have fouled Benda. Losing away and drawing at home is not good enough.

The stay-aways are still staying away, just under 15k attendance for this match.

We’re weak on the counter because of the current midfield set up in my opinion. Franco and O’Brien much better suited to being pressing 8s than Galbraith and Yalcouye. We often fail to win the ball high or lose it and Stamenic is left by himself. There was always an unmarked Millwall player in the space in front of our defence. We constantly lose the midfield battle because we’re always out numbered, the eights go high and wide, that’s why there’s always a massive gap. My opinion but I think we’d look much better playing in a 4231, Galbraith in the 10 with Yalcouye/Franco next to Stamenic.

Fine margins, our last three games -

H 1-1 D Millwall - two points dropped (46’ goal)

A 1-0 L Birmingham - one point dropped (94’ goal)

H 1-1 D Hull - two points dropped (97’ goal)

This evening, if we hadn’t dropped those 5 points we would be second in the table on 14 points. Instead we are thirteenth on 9 points. So frustrating.

The penalty shout: Cooper (already on a yellow) pull back on Vipotnik to deny him a clear goal scoring opportunity.

The goal: Cabango beaten in the air by Cooper for the cross to the far post. Cooper heads it back into the goalmouth. Stamenic is marking Coburn, Stamenic and Burgess get in the way of each other and Coburn is able to get between them and head the ball home.
