With the start of the season almost upon us we move on to our final friendly of the season, where we welcome Britanny based French Ligue 1 club FC L’Orient to the .Com Stadium.

Brittany, a peninsula on the coast of north western France, is sometimes called 'Little Britain' perhaps in part due to the number of Celts from Wales and Cornwall who escaped to rural France to avoid the Saxons invading England. They brought with them their Celtic language and skills.

The main language spoken in Brittany is French, but the region's traditional language is Breton – a Celtic language with over 1,500 years of history. Today, around 120,000-150,000 people speak Breton, making it the only Celtic language widely used on the European mainland.

Brittany is a priority region for Wales. The links between the two are strong. They have a Memorandum of Understanding to work together and create a joint action plan to maintain cultural links and to boost co-operation.

A sizeable population of 13,000 Brits reside there plus 10,000 more have second homes.

Back to the match and Swans have injury worries with Cabango, Eom and Santos out.

Our lack of cover in central defence has been exposed with midfielder Fulton playing out of position there in the friendly matches so far.

A lack of goals is also a worry, but a problem that will hopefully be resolved by bringing in a quality striker before our first league match on 9 Aug.

The teams:

Swansea City: Lawrence Vigouroux, Josh Key, Arthur Parker, Cameron Burgess (captain), Josh Tymon; Jay Fulton, Goncalo Franco, Ethan Galbraith, Melker Widell, Ronald; Liam Cullen.

Substitutes: Noah Cadiou, Bandiougou Fadiga, Jeremy Hatchi, Lucas Leaudais, Jean Victor Makengo, Fornose Mendy, Isak Monnier, Stevan Siba, Sambou Soumano, Bingourou Kamara, Bahliseni Fofana.

Swansea 1 (Liam Cullen 64’ pen)
Lorient 3 (Pablo Pagis 23’, 31’, Mohamed Bamba 42’ pen)

Completely outplayed first half, Lorient were an excellent passing team and cut through us time and again.
We came more into it second-half, Cullen had a goal disallowed for off side which looked dubious before he slotted home a penalty for a foul on Ronald.
Lorient the better team and deserved the win. If that’s an example of a French Ligue 2 team, what a high standard it must be.

Looks as if I was wrong. Lorient are actually in Ligue 1 of the French league.
No wonder they were so good.
They were relegated 23-24 season from Ligue 1 but 24-25 season they bounced straight back up after winning Ligue 2, number one of 18 clubs competing.
This is what threw me:
Wikipedia -
The club was founded in 1926 and currently competes in Ligue 2, having been relegated from Ligue 1 at the end of the 2023–24 season.
It wasn’t updated.
