Swansea v Coventry Sat 21 March 17:15

The last match of this month due to the International Break and we welcome the Championship’s top side all season, the Sky Blues of Coventry City.

We will cast our envious eyes on a team of winners, ironically the core of the team built around ex-Swans - captain Matt Grimes, centre-back Joel Latibeaudiere, left-back Jake Bidwell, goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, even their manager Frank Lampard played for us. He’s done a great job this season guiding them to the cusp of promotion.

For the Swans, last time out at Wrexham was another away game of contrasting halves. One half good but didn’t take chances, one half awful, where we had no idea how to break down a resolute defence, reverting to sideways and backwards football, resulting in another defeat on the road.

Coventry also lost, 1-2 at home to one of the divisions form teams Southampton, which included three ex-Swans, Manning, Wood and Downes.
In front of a 31,000 crowd at the CBS Arena, their only goal came from a penalty in the 92nd minute.

The Swans have just eight matches left, four home and four away, amongst them there are some tough matches:

We will have to be at our best to get anything from this match and to preserve our impressive home record since Vitor Matos took over.

Swansea 0 - Coventry 3 (Asante 33’ pen, Grimes 38’, Sakamoto 43’)

It was another bitterly disappointing display following on from the Wrexham defeat.

We started well enough but a disastrous ten minute spell before half-time turned the game in Coventry’s favour. It was fairly even up until then but the penalty turned the game. It looked like a dive from where I was sitting, no surprise as the ref was giving decisions Coventry’s way throughout.

We hit the bar and the post first half but once again rued those missed chances. Second half we were pretty clueless in trying to pierce their defence as Coventry relaxed and sat back relying on the counter attack. We seemed content not to concede more goals and lacked the nous to break them down, except for a few half-chances near the end.

To give Coventry credit they were by far the better team with Grimes the lynchpin of every move. He rubbed our noses in it with only his second goal of the season, unmarked of course. The other two ex-Swans Rushworth in goal and Latibeaudiere both had good games and even Bidwell came on to enjoy Coventry’s training session.

Down to earth with a bang then. What this one sided match told us is that we are miles away from having a good enough team to challenge at the top half of the table, never mind get promoted.

Matos and the players went over to clap the Jack Army at the end but there was hardly anybody left, most had departed.

Actually don’t think we’re as far away as that scoreline makes it look. Could and should have scored 3 ourselves, maybe even 4.

Cov goals weren’t brilliant either but they continued to get themselves in good positions in fairness and got their rewards.

Once again, finishing seems to be our issue. Think that’s a symptom of recruiting younger players, they still need to develop that killer instinct in game situations.

Widell performance looked a positive yesterday though, made some nice underlapping runs from the looks of it. We might be onto something if he can show more end product and Walta shows his talents next season.

The penalty though was the turning point and was like a sending off for us. We fell apart after that, didn't recover and Coventry were clinical but lets be honest we gifted them those goals on a silver platter. We have to improve on that.

Our defence is nowhere near good enough, it was Cabango's turn to have a poor outing - it was Burgess at Wrexham.

The 2nd one was poor from Eom, trying to be too clever in the corner of the pitch and the third is an unlucky deflection off Galbraith.

2nd was poor from Eom but it all came about from Burgess giving the ball away yet again
 
CB partnership doesn’t feel right. I like both of them individually as players and they’ve had some excellent games this season but together they don’t seem to suit as a long term partnership. Just feels like we’re missing that Harry Darling type player.

I'd look to replace Burgess first. He's so bad on the ball, far too often he puts us under pressure with some basic errors with the ball at his feet. Cabango isn't so bad and he's captain so he's harder to shift but Cabango for me is the obvious one of the 2 to put a much better ball player next to.
