Swansea v Charlton Sat 2 May 12:30

Our last game of the season and hopefully we get the win our strong home form deserves.

It was another good result yesterday with a draw at in form Norwich, making it four away games undefeated.

Our next opponents Charlton had an impressive 2-1 home win over Hull yesterday to ensure safety from relegation and also dealing a big blow to Hull’s play-off hopes.

Surprisingly, Charlton are unbeaten in their last six away games with one win and five draws, so this game will be far from easy.

Unfortunately we have to bear that man from Merthyr again, Nathan Jones, dancing up and down the touchline with his over exaggerated reactions to events on the pitch.

It’s been a mixed season with our saviour Matos coming in and rejuvenating the team and dragging us away from the lower reaches of the table after a disastrous run of defeats under Sheehan.

It would be nice to cap it all off with a win.

Especially against Nathan Jones!
 
A second half that gives us reasons to be optimistic for next season. Absolute precision from Walta for that free kick, reminded me of Rice against Real Madrid in the CL. Real quality to him. Woodward got that cross spot on for Idah. Should definitely be part of the squad next season despite his age.

I think a ball playing centre half could be transformative for this side. Add a few wingers who can score and we can hopefully start looking up.

Well done Matos👏, has done an excellent job keeping us motivated through the end of the season and we came through a difficult April with more points than I was expecting.
 
Swansea 3 (Idah 75’, 82’, Walta 88’) - Charlton 1 (Leaburn 79’)

Many were calling the first-half boring as we passed the ball endlessly without penetration. Charlton with a high block and five at the back could not be penetrated. Anytime we managed to get a cross in their big defenders gobbled the ball up. It was obvious Charlton were playing a spoiling game and relying on breakaways.

Second-half we were much better

One of their subs on 60’ was Miles Leaburn the giant 6’6” number 11, I said when he came on we would have trouble handling him in the air and so it turned out.

The ref was letting a lot of fouls go and never brought his card out once.

Widell was injured on 36’ and replaced by Walta. Widell was on crutches when everybody came on the pitch at the end.

Stamenic was replaced by Fulton at half-time in a strange move unless he took a knock.

Idah came on for Cullen after 65 mins, both Idah and Vipotnik were on the field together for 12 mins, before Vipotnik gave way for Woodward to make his debut.

Idah scored with an assist from Key but four minutes later Charlton were level from a corner straight to Leaburn who headed home unmarked.

Idah wasn’t finished though and an impressive debut from Woodward was capped by an assist for Idah’s second.

We were still not done and Walta scored with a superb free kick to the top right-hand corner of the net. A nice way to end the season.
 
2nd time Idah has scored a double off the bench? Very promising signs from him, effortless finishing and looks more mobile than Vipotnik.

Maybe we'll sign a loan striker as backup to him in summer?

Second half we upped the intensity and looked far too strong for Charlton. Walta putting in that display before the close of the season will do him wonders going into next season. Like the fact that whenever he had the chance to shoot, he took it which is something we lack in midfield. My only worry with Idah is that he’s looked impactful everytime he’s come off the bench when the opposition is tiring. But also appreciate that he hasn’t had many starts this season due to Vipi/injuries. I think RW is the priority position going into the summer, ideally a left footer who can cut in. Ironically the Benson-version that was at Burnley. Midfield I don’t think we’ll see a lot of change, maybe a loan to replace Yalcouye but we’ve invested a lot there over the past year. And then they’ll have the CB/RB conundrum. Lissah coming back in, where do they see his position. If he slots in at RB you could go into the season with him, Parker and Key. I just feel a little uncomfortable with Cabango and Burgess as a pairing next season as I don’t think the club will look at disrupting that which is the worry.

Anyway, time to forget club football for abit, enjoy the World Cup and then go again next season 🤞

I have the same worry about Idah, been excellent as a sub but can he be our starting striker next season? He can certainly find the back of the net. Would still like to see what he could offer out wide.

Lissah is surely good enough to be involved next season. He made the SPL team of the season so I’d expect him to be challenging. I hope he’s the ball player that we need at CB but physically the Championship is a different level.

Should be an entertaining World Cup, good for us that neither Galbraith or Vipotnik are going so any deals should be done quite early in the summer🤞🤞
