As the Cardiff derby match looms closer one wonders why it’s scheduled so early on in the season, just the third match in.

After their poor start to the season, a 2-0 home defeat to Sunderland and a 5-0 thumping at Burnley, morale in the Bluebirds camp must be low.

Head-Coach Erol Bulut has moved swiftly to replace centre-back Mark McGuiness, sold to Luton for £10m. They conceded seven goals in their first two matches without him.

Incoming is centre-back Jesper Daland signed from Cercle Brugge to plug the gap.

They’ve also signed central-midfielder Alex Robertson from Man City and centre-forward Wilfred Kanga from Hertha BSC on loan.

Plus:

Calum Chambers, centre-back, Aston Villa, free.

Anwar El-Ghazi, right-winger, FSV Mainz 05, free.

Joe Baglan, left-back, Zulte Waregem, free.

Isaak Davies and Kion Etete are out injured.


Swans however, after a narrow 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough, a penalty deciding the match, and a convincing 3-1 home win over Preston, will have their tails up and will be full of confidence.

Not that form has any bearing on the match with derbies being so unpredictable, but you have to say Swans must be favourites to win this one.

First reaction was huge disappointment, it felt like a defeat and almost was at the end.

We dominated most of the first half and should have been two or three goals up.

An early goal after ten minutes and it looked as if we’d cruise it.

The game turned second-half and it was all about the subs. Ours made us weaker, theirs made them stronger.

It was down to our manager. He took Eom for Abdulai at 59’. He took off our best player Franco for Fulton on 67’. He took off Cooper for Zan on 68’, and all three were ineffective substitutions. On 78’ he took off Key for Naughton and Cullen for Allen.

On 79’ Cardiff scored with ease, sub Colwill to sub Tanner, his cross feeding sub Robinson who was completely unmarked and fired home.

First point of the season, first goal of the season for bottom club Cardiff.
