Swansea City v Manchester City, EFL Cup Fourth Round, Wed 29 Oct 19:45

There will be a Blue Moon appearing in Swansea on Wednesday night when the two cities football teams clash in this last sixteen round of the League Cup.

We played them regularly during our Premier League days between 2011 and 2018 but having spent the last seven years in the relative football wilderness trying to get back to the promised land, there’s only been two cup games against them.

One time winner versus eight times winner of this competition will now meet once again.

Our most recent game was in 2021 in the FA Cup where we lost 1-3, but the most memorable for the wrong reasons was in 2019 in the FA Cup where we lost 2-3.

That Quarter Final defeat in 2019 was in controversial circumstances where the Swans had taken a 2-0 lead through a Grimes penalty and a Celina wonder goal.

Then the contentious Blues goals, where Carter-Vickers was adjudged by ref Andre Marriner to have tripped sub Sterling in the area and Aguero's penalty hit the post before rebounding in off Nordfeldt for an own goal. Replays showed the centre-back had touched the ball before clipping Sterling's ankle, and Swansea's injustice was compounded by Aguero's fortunate conversion for the 2-2 equaliser.

The other when Aguero scored an offside 89th minute winner. Replays showed the Argentina striker was marginally offside.

VAR was not used that night, despite having been used in Man City's previous third and fourth-round home ties.

Back to Wednesday night and it’s a free hit for the Swans and a welcome diversion from league woes.

A win is not expected but as we know anything can happen in Cup games, just enjoy the show.

What a difference a capacity crowd made to the atmosphere and against top opposition. It was a great effort by the players and we even took an early lead. I liked the 5-4-1 formation and I thought Casey and Samuels-Smith slotted in well.

Widell, Franco, Galbraith and Inoussa looked strong and battled well in midfield.

It wasn’t until the 73rd minute, after our substitutions weakened us (the heart of midfield Widell, Franco and Inoussa subbed off) that Blues took the lead.

We were further weakened on 83 minutes with forward Cullen coming on for defender Samuels-Smith and within ten minutes the third goal was conceded.

I understand why the subs were made though as we were running out of steam and Sheehan probably had one eye on Charlton in a few days time.

Without trying to be too harsh on Swansea, looking at the game statistics is an eye opener and reveals the gap in class between the two sides.

Man City made ten changes from last Saturdays league game and it just shows the depth of talent they have that the game statistics are so one sided in their favour.
