Swansea v Southampton
Sat 8 Jan 2022 17:30 (live on BBC Wales)
At the time of writing the match is still going ahead, albeit with both teams fielding weakened sides.
A month off without playing due to players with Covid puts the Swans at a disadvantage. It’s unknown how many players were infected or how many are still out, only that we will have enough fit players to field a team, plus five subs.
It will be the first match to be played behind closed doors since last season, compensated somewhat by the fact it will be televised live.

A date that will long be remembered by Swans fans -
Wed 6 May 2018, Swansea 0 Southampton 1
A disastrous day for the Swans under Carlos Carvalhal, with Mark Hughes’ Southampton all but relegating us from the Premier League.
Swans had gone eight matches without a win, D3 L5, going into this match.
Carvalhal had made three changes, bringing in Naughton, King and Clucas from the side that lost 1-0 to Bournemouth in the previous match, with Van der Hoorn, Carroll and Dyer all dropping down to the bench.
Back to the present day, eight months on from reaching a play-off final at Wembley, we are on another downward trajectory, with four defeats in the last six matches, and in our lowest league position for over a decade.
But it’s okay, we are trying to get reinforcements from League One MK Dons!

Swans: Hamer, Bennett, Naughton, Cooper, Manning, Downes, Smith, Walsh, Cullen, Obafemi, Piroe
Subs: Benda, Fulton, Grimes, Ntcham, Dhanda, Bidwell, D.Williams, R.Williams, Abdulai

0-1
8’ goal, suicidal pass from Liam Walsh straight to a Southampton player, Redmond one on one with Hamer, easily fires home.
Here we go again.

HT: 0-1
Swans looked clueless in attack. Southampton could have had 3 or 4 goals up until the sending off. After that they dropped deep and Swans had no idea how to break them down.

96’ 2-1
Dhanda crosses to Ntcham, he shoots, deflected in off Bednarek.
96’ 2-2
Straight from kick off, Long to Elyounoussi, completely unmarked, Bennett stretches and Hamer beaten.

2-3 Prowse to Long and another poor goal conceded.
Thrown away a lead against ten men and conceded two goals, really!

Extra time FT: 2-3
No urgency from our players at the end, sub for Smith was Rhys Williams who was hopeless, once he just passed it straight to a Saints player. Why wasn’t Bidwell on? Then off-side from a short corner, you couldn’t make it up.
We’re only concerned with passing sideways and back.
Defence like a sieve, it’s our fourth straight defeat and a total of eleven goals conceded.
But it’s okay, we had 63% possession!
Gary Monk says afterwards, don’t be too harsh on Swansea after a month out, they’ve had a tough time.
I disagree, this coach and his unworkable system, with players playing out of position and more concerned with possession stats, is going to take us down.
Championship survival is paramount now. Four games behind some teams and next up is in-form Huddersfield away, who’ve just beaten Burnley at Turf Moor in the Cup.

We threw that away, lacked urgency throughout an intensity to get through a stubborn 10 man Southampton side.

Goals conceded again just so soft. I know it was against premier league opposition but we've seen it so many times before.

We switch off after scoring, give away the first goal with an awful pass, pass for the sake of it and look like amateurs defensively. The trademarks of Martin football that I just hope he can solve and get rid of sooner rather than later.
