Swans v Plymouth Tue 24 Aug 19:00 EFL Carabao Cup Second Round
Exactly five weeks after meeting Plymouth in a pre-season friendly at Home Park on 20 July with Steve Cooper in charge we meet them once again in the Carabao Cup.
That day we won 1-2 there, with Whittaker and Cullen scoring first half goals, Hardie replying for the hosts.
Plymouth had the better chances and should have at least drawn the match. Apart from the first half spell when we scored the two goals, it was the usual bore fest from the Swans. Both centre-backs Bennett and Latibeaudiere were poor and it was Bennett’s mistake for their goal by Hardie. The team that day was:
Steven Benda; Kyle Naughton (Dan Williams 73), Ryan Bennett (Scott Butler 73), Joel Latibeaudiere (Ben Margetson 79), Jake Bidwell; Jay Fulton (Liam Walsh 46), Matt Grimes capt (Korey Smith 61); Morgan Whittaker (Kyle Joseph 73), Yan Dhanda (Joel Piroe 61) Jamal Lowe (Ryan Manning 73); Liam Cullen.
These were the match highlights:

Last Saturday in League One Plymouth beat Shrewsbury away 0-3 with their danger man Ryan Hardie again on the scoresheet with two goals. They sit in 8th position in the table with 7 points from 4 games.
In the Carabao Cup First Round they beat Championship side Peterboro on their own patch 0-4 with that man Hardie scoring two of their goals.
This will not be an easy match, especially with us being in transition phase, still getting used to a new style of play under a new head-coach.

RM’s squad integration with the new playing style continues to be disrupted by injuries and positive Covid tests.
The up to date status on the 7 senior players who missed the Bristol City game is as follows -
Kyle Naughton and Ryan Bennett are both available to play in tonight’s cup match after completing their isolation period due to testing positive for coronavirus.
Ben Cabango and Flynn Downes continue to be unavailable, still isolating after positive coronavirus tests.
Also out injured are Korey Smith (calf), Liam Walsh (hamstring) and of course long term injury Connor Roberts (groin).

The teams-

Swansea City: Ben Hamer; Joel Latibeaudiere, Ryan Bennett (captain), Ryan Manning; Kyle Joseph, Jay Fulton, Dan Williams, Jake Bidwell; Yan Dhanda; Jamal Lowe, Morgan Whittaker.
Substitutes: Lewis Webb, Brandon Cooper, Joel Piroe, Liam Cullen, Kyle Naughton, Ethan Laird, Ollie Cooper.
Plymouth Argyle: Callum Burton, Macaulay Gillsephey, Dan Scarr, Ryan Broom, Joe Edwards (captain), Ryan Hardie, Adam Randell, Ryan Law, Panutche Camara, Luke Jephcott, Ollie Tomlinson.
Substitutes: Michael Cooper, Jordan Houghton, Brendan Galloway, George Cooper, Finley Craske, Ethan Mitchell, Rhys Shirley.

Swansea 4 - Plymouth 1
Williams 29’ - Shirley 63’
Whittaker 79’, 86’, 90’
A late hat trick by Whittaker, the first Swans player to do so in ten years, turned the match in Swansea’s favour and saw us through to the next round.
The score line somewhat flattered the Swans as Plymouth played well and were solid in defence and frustrated us for long periods with a back five but they were also quick on the counter attack, especially on their left hand side. They no doubt tired towards the end though chasing the ball so much as Swansea domineered possession.

"I am really pleased with the result and so much that we saw. We had a little spell for 15 minutes in the second half where we got a bit slow and sloppy, we did not take enough care and it led to their goal.
So I was frustrated with that, and I still am, but the way the guys then wrestled back control was excellent.
That's the beauty of having the ball and dominating the ball. The opposition get very tired towards the end, and it opened up."

Young Academy product midfielder 20 year old Dan Williams 37, scored our opening goal last night. He made his senior debut in the last round of the EFL Cup, a 0-3 win at Reading. He played the full 90 minutes in both games. His contract extension finishes at the end of the season. He also made his debut for Wales U-21’s last season in the 5-0 drubbing against Belgium.
