Supermarket Workers Pay

The Fear

Fairly interesting to see the difference in pay between the supermarkets and good to see Aldi 2nd, as one of the discounters it is good to see they aren't making our savings via low staff pay.

Iceland and Tesco the lowest.

How much each supermarket pays staff outside London
Morrisons - from £10

Aldi - from £9.55

Lidl - from £9.50

Waitrose - from £9.50

Sainsbury’s - from £9.50

M&S - from £9.50

Asda - from £9.36

Tesco - from £9.30

Iceland - from £8.91

I would have thought with all of their levels of profits, they could pay theirs staff £10 an hour.

Tesco Profit = £700m

Pay increase:
70p per hour x 40 hours per week x 52 weeks of the year x 200 payroll staff x 1,000 stores = £291m

So they could pay it, shareholders might not be happy and so then consumers would pay for it.

Saying that, a Tesco worker on £9.30 would make over £19k per year - that’s not bad.

I did hear or read somewhere Aldi pay workers a bit more to get the better people, incentivise people to not leave and put more pressure on the overheads of the bigger retailers who have a lot more processes with a couple of hundred people on the books if any one large supermarket, unlike Aldi who seem to have about 5!

Pay increase:
70p per hour x 40 hours per week x 52 weeks of the year x 200 payroll staff x 1,000 stores = £291m
Don't forget the increase in employer NICs as well, another 13.8% on top.

But agree that such a pay rise is one they would be well able to make to ensure they retain staff and attract better ones.
