England and Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has been charged with three counts of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

The 27-year-old, from Castle Eden, County Durham, was initially arrested on 2 March.

He was also charged with one offence of grooming when he answered bail at a police station earlier, Durham Police said.

He will appear before Peterlee Magistrates' Court on 20 May.

Sunderland AFC initially suspended the winger pending the outcome of the investigation, but this was lifted on 18 March.

The club are yet to comment on the charges.

Gerry Wareham, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said he had authorised police to charge Johnson under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

He said the offences are alleged to have been committed on a single victim between 30 December 2014 to 26 February this year.

"May I remind all concerned that the defendant has a right to a fair trial," he said.

"It is very important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.

Silly man, he'll deserve everything he gets - if found guilty the prison may well be the outcome.

Obviously Sunderland are very desperate, or they believe the defense has enough to get him off, as he has not been suspended by the club and will be considered for selection if fit.

Whilst we should always remind ourselves that one is presumed innocent until proved otherwise, I fear it would be a massive mistake for Sunderland to select him and no doubt suffer a barrage of abuse from opponent fans, if not his own.

Why subject someone to that when not even been found guilty of anything as of yet.

As far as I remember, Sunderland fans have been singing his name in the stands for the past few games.
Poor taste!

That would be poor taste if continued now he has been charged. As stated, time to remove him from the spotlight, for his well being, and for the alleged victims. Let the criminal justice system play out.

He isn't guilty yet. More social media justice.

Yep, spot on, all we have to go on is the fact he's been charged - who knows how old she held herself out to be etc etc..

He should keep playing until their is a definitive outcome.

Guilty or not he's fucked for life now. Even of she lied about her age. Many people don't care about details.

What is the betting the girl claimed to be older than she was?

Maybe, maybe not. It doesn't matter either way.
Anyway, innocent until proven guilty. It's hard to imagine the CPS would pursue this kind of thing unless they had some substantial reason, though.

I really don't see any kind of social media justice!

If anything, it has been unjust, as some thugs have apparently named the underage girl on twitter.

It should matter though, if she lied, then he was led on with false information.

What is he supposed to do? Ask for a passport for evidence.

So many women do this type of thing just to get into the press.

Mind you he has a partner so he is a fecking idiot anyway. Especially being rich and famous.

I'm not so sure it was 'thugs'.

The allegations against Johnson were only made because the young ladies father apparently saw her social media posts in respect of her 'relationship' with the player.

So allegedly a very wide circle of her friends and acquaintances had already identified her to media outlets.

Such are the pitfalls and joys of how social media can be used and abused.

Should be on garden leave until all resolved - garden leave without announcement - no big deal about him not playing - a neutral act as they say ...

He's been charged with grooming too which would suggest there must be significant evidence to suggest he was well aware of her age.

But as others have said and I completely agree, innocent until proven guilty. That grooming charge doesn't make it look good though.

This happens very frequently here in Australia, whereas the police pose as an underage girl/boy, set up the rendezvous and BANG! There you go.

What a fool. He has a partner, a career etc, now he'll be next to unemployable.
