Summer transfer thread

Vic, Hud - whatever you wanna call me!

Just waiting for Fossey to inevitably sign back with Bolton now to make this less-than-stellar start to the window a bit more miserable...

Sorry brain fart, your profile pic of Moses made me think of fellow poster called Vic Moses.

Hopefully we'll get some good news soon.

This window is all about quality over quantity. Due to building a squad from scratch we didn't have any senior players apart from Massey out of contract. I'd say our second string is stronger than any second second string we have been promoted from League One in any previous season. We just need to sign a few players to strengthen the starting 11 and add something to this group of players.

I reckon around 5 signings overall probably a couple of loanees amongst that, likely to be much later in pre season once Premier League clubs assess youngsters and who they want to loan out.

Rotherham had several out of contract and just lost Smith. They will need to make a lot more signings than us this window.

Yeah I can see the confusion ha! I vowed to make whoever made the largest contribution to the admin fund my profile picture forever and it's a promise I intend to keep!

Was sweating for a bit when Bill Kenyon made that £5001 donation mind...

Bolton signed a right back from Liverpool yesterday so I wouldn’t worry too much

Smith and Iheikwe both leaving Rotherham after rejecting new contracts. Massive blow for Rotherham to lose 2 huge players for them.

Sheff Wed apparently looking to bring in both. We could do a lot worse than offering them deals and Championship football.

Edit - Sheff Wed have confirmed the signing of both. That's brutal for Rotherham to lose 2 of their key players to a division below in the eve of preseason.

Rotherham replaced Smith:
Tom Eaves [Hull - Rotherham] Free

I can't see him scoring many this season for them.

Whats a little concerning to me is that when we have been linked with players its often just been the one link in media and then nothing else which to me doesnt necessarily indicate a lot of interest from us but mainly media gossip and them putting two and two together to get five as they say.

I just hope the idea that 'we won the league so dont need many new squad additions' line isnt clouding our thinking. Yes we dont need 10/11/12 new additions but we certainly need more than just 2 or 3. There are some very valid questions going into the new season.
- Not sure how Naylor and Power will step up to Championship level. As alluded to before Naylor this season has Perkins in 2016-17 Championship season written all over it in terms of he was a good player at League One level but couldnt step up at Championship level
- None of our strikers are prolific goalgetters at Championship level, we dont know whether Wyke will be the same player after the awful incident that occurred last season not to mention Richardson wasnt very keen on playing Humphreys a lot in mid week matches in League One, so i question how much game time he will get in the Championship.
- McLean is still a good player but he is getting on and we are unsure yet if Lang can step up a level in the Championship. Another winger is absolutely a priority
- Darikwa whilst he has done well for us was shaky at times in League One and we absolutely need an upgrade for the Championship.
- Need a reliable partner in defence alongside Whatmough for when we play in a 2 central defender system.

Im aware that June is difficult with player contracts still running till 30th June but other clubs this week seem to be stepping up their business and getting on with transfers (Millwall i think broke their transfer record for a Dutch player today, probably a Jed Wallace replacement). Yet its been quiet as a mouse when it comes to new signings with us.

I understand this might all be a bluff and come first day of traning camp in Spain there might be 3 or 4 new faces through the door and everything will be fine but i would have expected AT LEAST one or maybe two new arrivals through the door as the players returned to pre season training. Just to give everywhere a lift. My fear is we are behind other clubs already and thats not ideal.

History tells us too that we arent very good in the January window when it comes to signings (see 2014-15 Championship relegation season). Plus im not a fan of dashing around late in a transfer window for players, you get charged over the odds and often all the good signings are already snapped up.

Willing to see what happens next week before going into all blown panic mode but im in concerned mode already, id have liked a few players in through the doors now so that we can get them adapted and used to our system before the season starts as opposed to doing signings in between pre season friendlies.

Huddersfield's promotion season from the Championship to the Premier League was the best example of how getting business done in the market early is always preferable. They got most of their new players signed up before pre season and it allowed them to hit the ground running. Concerningly for us, major rumour this week has been about a player depature with the McGrath to Aberdeen links getting stronger. Starting to get worried personally, need a signing or two through the door by end of next week.

At the fixture release breakfast on Thursday Leam apparently told people not to expect to many signings. As they are giving the current squad a chance.
As said above I hope it works cos I don't fancy our chances in the January window.

I expect we will have some players in training with us who will go on the pre-season trip with us and we might make some announcements while they are out there or when they get back. I’m glad any business is being done quietly behind the scenes if I’m honest because the likes of Nixon whip this board up into a frenzy and sometimes for no good reason. Fossey might well be going on the pre-season camp for all we know. Best think to do is to keep an eye on some of these players social accounts as they often provide clues. I’m sure that is what Nixon and co do too

To me in terms of rivals at bottom end of Championship there are four clubs we absolutely should be looking to finish ahead of and secure Championship football for 2023-24.

Rotherham - Finished ahead of them last season and losing Ihiekwe and Smith is a blow for them before the new season.

Blackpool - Neil Critchley is a big reason they got up to the Championship and stayed there. Now he has gone they are more vulnerable amid talks that their playing budget is being cut for 2022-23 due to reports they supposedly desire to modernise their training ground and upgrade their academy. Not to mention question marks over Michael Appleton at Championship level as Critchley's managerial replacement.

Reading & Birmingham - Both look in total crisis atm, think Reading are embargoed and are resticted in what they can spend. Not to mention Paul Ince wouldnt fill me with confidence over a full season as manager at this level, even if he did well keeping them up last season late on. Birmingham again, lack of money, cutting back, a reported takeover going on atm. Another club in crisis.

Its kinda why i would have liked a few players in before the pre season training camp in Spain to really get further ahead of these four clubs above, all of whom appear to be in either a crisis mode atm or in difficulties.

But yes, who knows maybe player signings are being kept very close to the chest and we will have signings news halfway through next week. Happy to hear about the three U23 signings today. Brennan looked like he posted good numbers for Blackburn's U23's last season and i know a whole host of clubs wanted Stones from Guiseley and were monitoring him.

Either we are skint or using the money to invest outside the players, very risky expecting this team to stay up without investment, the squad wasn’t exactly smashing teams in league one and struggled for results in many games, will be a very tough ask for the lads, especially considering we don’t know if our main goal scorers will adapt at this level.
