Summer 2020 Transfer Speculation

Adam Marriott has not accepted new terms offered at Kings Lynn and is looking for an EFL return. Really liked the bloke, will never forget his pass against Ipswich, his goal against Tranni in a very tight game, you would think a Div 2 Club would give him a go. Maybe one of those players his top level is somewhere between a top non league side and Div 2.

Unfortunately I think injuries will always prevent Marriott from being a real full time player. There is no question about his ability, technique and brain. However he has suffered massively in the past which I think is what led to his deal with Imps being partly performance related. A real shame as I think he is a really gifted player and from all accounts a decent bloke too. Hopefully I am wrong and he is strengthened now.

That's probably about right. We all remember the great moments from Marriott in 2016-17: scoring the first goal of the Cowley era, that pass against Ipswich, the winner at Macclesfield, the winner against Tranmere, and turning the game against Torquay. All five of those are key events from that season, so it is easy to forget that he only started 11 of our 61 matches. He was an impact sub, either by design or accident, and four of those key moments came from the bench. He only made two appearances during the cup run, both as substitute. Rumours of injury problems abounded, and he did break his arm in a friendly against Peterborough. For a player who had such an impact on the season, there has to be a reason why he only started 11 games. Perhaps DC will tell us one day.

Re: Marriott, given his clear excellence at finishing there must have been some injury restrictions. Perhaps with better fitness he would have had more minutes on the bench - you would think he would have been a better option to put up front than Muldoon if available.

Interesting snippet from the Echo article today.

"The 22-year-old [Montsma], who has signed from Dutch second division side FC Dordrecht, was brought to the club’s attention through analyst Joe Hutchinson who joined the club from the FA in January."

Not one that Appleton found out about then!

I would have thought that’s the whole point of employing an analyst - to bring players with qualities and attributes defined by the manager to his attention.

Everything in football now is governed by statistics and formal analysis, usually carried out by a team of specialists. We have had a recruitment team for some time, headed by Jez George, to source and analyse players. I'm sure there will be parameters set by the manager to identify suitable candidates for each position for his style of play, and the better candidates are considered by the manager once the basic research has been done. Makes perfect sense to me to take this spadework away from MA and allow him to concentrate on everyday team matters. Some players will be known to the manager, some will not. In fact, I would be worried if we were only to consider players the manager personally knows about.

Quite right - he was discovered by the analyst that Appleton found out about and brought to the club..... to do just that.

Fair play, the chap is earning his money. Perhaps it is a bit much to expect the manager to be aware of every player in every league and their availability!

Even though I live near Kings Lynn I only look briefly at their press, but I think he was their top scorer last season with 27 ish and seemed to play most games so maybe he has resolved his fitness problems.

I think you're probably right there. It would be even more remarkable to have reached those figures largely as a sub/not playing often! It does surprise me that more League Two clubs haven't taken an interest, but perhaps that will change now he's a free agent.

Archibald has been mooted for a while. 22year old winger who was well thought of during his youth at Celtic but hasn't quite kicked on since. Ticks MA's preferred young player to nurture boxes

Having said the above...........browsing through that twitter account ( as there's nowt on telly )..............they've got Ivan Toney going to Rangers for 15 million and the Cowley brothers about to be announced as the new Bristol City manager team by paying Huddersfield £500,000 in compensation.

I appreciate these transfer twitter sites sometimes get it right based on the sheer number of things they stick on there but if the above two rumours are anything to go by I wouldn't bet my house on anything that account says

Of course, some of those agent sites or whatever they are or spring up from could well be wide of the mark. I know we have been rumoured to be in for him previously, so thought it worth sharing the post. Sounds like one player could be coming in Friday (today) which would make sense with It being new kit reveal day.

We shall see If we do get another in, and whether it’s going to be Archibald or not.
