How about looking at a Jedinak replacement then?
The one I think we'd most likely be able to get is, Southampton's Jordy Clasie.
He is a slightly different type of player to Jedinak but, very effective as a DM when playing in the Dutch league.
There is also Luis Gustavo of Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.



I missed the news about Hepburn-Murphy but, even so, he is a fair distance away from being a first team starter, no matter the amount of early potential he has shown.

Do you really think a top Brazilian international midfielder from the Bundesliga is a realistic signing for a championship club?
 
There is a slight possibility but, only a slight possibility mate.
The thing is, we'll never know if we don't ask, will we?

There is another reason for attempting to sign such a player, apart from the obvious one of actually signing them, it shows other potential targets that the club has high ambitions, which makes it a little easier to sell them a project.
 
I didn't take Green long to get up and running. You never know, but I suspect RHM once he's fit might be challenging for a place fairly quickly.
 
There are some players who I never want to see in a Villa shirt and Defoe is one of them, I have my opinion. No doubt he is a goalscorer, but his heart is in London, not Villa Park. Call me old school, call me what you like, but NO. I just don't want to see Villa take short term options like Keane, Defoe. There has to be another way, sure the days of one club players have long gone, but I don't want one season wonders of a certain age who would only be wooed by a fat cheque anyway.

Robbie Keane is free at the moment. Great player in his day.

I agree with what you say but I'd hardly call Defoe and Keane one season wonders. They've both scored over 250 goals in their careers. Both have a decent goal scoring record, it's age that's the factor. If they're professional they'll be motivated but how long would they realistically be able to keep up with the pace?
 
I can't see Defoe playing in the championship anyway. I'm sure premiership clubs will come in for him still. Who knows but I doubt we would have brought him ages ago.
 
We are still in need of at least one experienced goalkeeper, one centre back capable of playing the central role in a back three, (assuming Samba doesn't make it), one defensive midfielder to cover Jedinak and at least one forward to cover injury and international duties, like the ACN tournament.
 
We need a centre half , but one that is more suited to playing in a pairing as we seem to have abandoned the three at the back formation.
 
Having a central defender capable of playing in the middle of a back three, would be a distinct advantage, as it would allow a change of formation/tactics.
With a 3-man backline, with Chester on the right, Baker on the left and Newbie in the middle, with Jedinak sitting deep, it would allow both Bree and Amavi to start further forward, which would suit their style of play much better. This would also allow the central midfielders to play 5 to 10 yards closer to the two forwards. With at least one of the forwards dropping a little deeper, it would give us at least 5 in midfield and at times 6 or 7 and that is a midfield very unlikely to be over-run. It would also provide us with at least 4 if not 6 players, to press high up the pitch. It is definitely an attacking formation.
 
I think there will be a lot more outs than ins this summer, our wage bill must be huge for the championship. We have about 6 guys out on loan at the minute that will either have to be used or sold. Playing under bruce we don't seem to have any style so he's got another 10 games to try sort that out, if we don't develop some kind of playing style then just buying better players in won't solve anything.

As for central midfielders we have recenty played Bacuna and Gardner in there. We don't need replacements?

Hourihane is not an engine room midfielder. His tackling is about on a par with Grealish's. He is either an attacking midfielder - which he appears to be very good at - or is not in the team.

If we go into next season with our current midfield we will not get promoted. If you really don't think we need reinforcements take a look at the bench we name against Huddersfield. Bruce will struggle to name a balanced starting 11, he won't even get as far as giving himself options to call on if things go a bit pear shaped.

I would expect any incoming player to be a potential first choice. If we go through next season with Jedinak and Lansbury on the bench then the chances are that we will have pissed the league.

Edit: I took out most of my post it got too long the key point is below. Other topics I disagree with the quantity of players but agree with positionally we could do we a GK, CB and Winger, Centre Mid is TBD for me.

I think there are two schools of thought on this type of thing, theres:
1. Have an equal replacement for every position
2. Have a team good enough to not miss a player

I dont even need to worry about it because Bruce is going to go with option #2 as he is Fergies bo. This is something that requires different thinking, if you're so worried about this guy getting injured and not playing then why not remove that factor from the equation. I know the next thing is going to be 'our current team can't play without him', Lansbury and Hourihane havent even played 10 games together they need more time.

Notwithstanding the above any team relying on Nathan Baker, Alan Hutton and last resort Sam Johnston is going to need Jedinak to protect them. There is a lot to think about and so many considerations but the way forward is to figure out a way to not need Jedinak. I really really like him as a player but you're forced into such a rigid setup if he is your key man we need an alternative and a 'mini-jedinak' isnt the answer.

Therefore , those need to be a goalie and 2 centre backs.

Chester and Baker may be the best we have, but they are just not good enough.

In Bakers case, thats a real shame because I think we all were / are hoping we had anither Mellberg - but he is 24, and still making the mistakes you expect a 18yr old to be learning from

As for Chester. Well, if anyone knows a Defender, its Pulis, and he said he wasnt good enough , enough said.

Johnstone - he may well be a good goalie in 2023, but we need one in 2017 !. Doesmt command, is indevisive (which makes the above poorer) and males mistskes.

If we got those, with the rest of the team we have now? Iwould be 99% certain on promotion next year
 
'Two or three' is a bit of a worry, but hardly a surprise. I get the feeling that the pot has been spent.
