Its the identify and mentality of the side, so, maybe, it is the manager.

Under Cooper, we were scared of our own shadow, and afraid to venture much beyond 40 yards from our goaline.
Taiwo was abandoned upfield, often surrounded by half their side.

Compare that to SNES mid-block counter charge.
Full backs often the most offensive, the midfield charging and not holding.
Wingers hugging the whitelines...beautiful.
