Stuart Webber Q&A

A mate of mine went to a Q&A at Carrow Road on Friday night with Stuart Webber.
Here’s the headlines...

Webber feels that we currently have a very strong squad and that they are happy with it. Promotion has to be the target he said.

They prioritised pace (competition for Onel H) and strength and aerial ability, Hugill & Gibson etc, this summer.

He thinks that Skipp is an excellent player and that Adam Idah is “ready to explode” this season

Said of Dowell injury “that’s life” but he will be like a new signing come January.

Webber hates the fact that the transfer window is still open when season has started.

Liverpool’s offer for Lewis was far too low. He said Jamal had tears in his eyes when told it would be rejected. He added that he thinks that even if City had accepted it that Liverpool would still have bought that Greek fella.

The offer from Barca for Max Barca came in an email last Friday and he was told by Max’s agent to expect it. It was too low and rejected - there has been no contact from FCB since.

On Sunday morning he sat down with Max, to explain why the bid was rejected. Added that people should remember that Max is only 20 and still just a kid, albeit a mature one. Said that mood in squad this week has been quiet after the Barca thing, saying Max will have had other players, his agent etc, saying “They wouldn’t let you join Barcelona?! That’s harsh.” Difficult situation for all concerned.

Another staff member (not Webber) said later that Webber never likes selling good players and always pushes to keep them. This person also said that Lewis’ head had gone by the time Newcastle bid for him and that Webber was disappointed because he thought the club could’ve got more for Jamal.

Also this other person feels that Webber and Farke’s biggest problem will be keeping all the players happy as it is such a big squad.

More to come when I remember it!

Also, EFL players are no longer being routinely tested for COVID. In the PL they had a specialist nurse and we’re tested twice a week. Now though, City players only get a test if they have symptoms, just like the rest of us.

Webber also spoke about the latest COVID advice and the way that the country is “run by people who don’t know what they’re doing.”
He despaired at the way so few EFL clubs took up the chance to run a pilot match with fans last week and at the way lower league clubs are being financially hammered by the crowd decision.
He added that he is taking his 4 yr old son to Germany with him in a couple of weeks to watch a match.

As fans sit in the open and there is distance between social bubbles I dont see what the problem is with a % of the fans going to games as long as when fans enter and leave the ground there is good enough social distancing. as I saw many bunching up after the PNE game.

Bunching while not wearing masks is risky as the virus can leave a person (70% who have the active virus dont show any symptoms) via their mouth and enter somebody else via the nose and mouth which are both connected to the lungs where the damage happens.

BTW. was this a public Q&A or for a certain group of people?

As for keeping the squad happy.....off the top of my head we have 29 with shirt numbers. Say 4 are injured (Oxborough, Byram, Dowell are out for months and we are bound to have at least 1 with a knock) takes us to 25. 18 are involved on a matchday........so the other 7 will "have to pull their finger out" to avoid being disappointed!!! We play better when we have competition in the squad.

A partners (sponsors) meeting.
I think the government are worried about where people will congregate before and after games which was traditionally, the pub. Having said that, the Preston trial went pretty well I thought. The bunching afterwards sounds like it was solved by a sensible steward and I would assume that particular incident would t be replicated at the next one...

We have to hope that a lesson was learnt that day.........

I hope the fact 'the mood in squad this week has been quiet after the Barca thing.' Won't affect us for the game tomorrow.

I wonder why the squad was affected?

Will they self isolate for 14 days when they get back or go for their regular visits to Colney

The way that Webber explained it was that one of your mates, in a tight knit group like the squad, got the dream move of a lifetime rejected. He reasoned that they might be thinking, “If they could do that to Max, they could do that to me.”

I suppose that In any work place or group there can be complex relationships and issues going on At any one time between either individuals or the company.

So players might not be very happy?

Some will take it on the chin and realise that life is like that, (others, usually young) might not have gained that kind of experience yet and these episodes will help them understand for the future. Max gives the impression that he has already had a few knock backs in life but has learnt by some mistakes already.

Max comes over as mature for his age.

Players should realise that the club had no choice when an unrealistic offer such as a loan deal comes in. Why a loan offer by a giant club because they are having problems financially (and players should then ask themselves, Will I get paid?). I should imagine that when a serious "cash" offer is made that is acceptable to NCFC Plc that the club will not stand in their way. If the sustainable model is to work then along the way some players will be sold to "bigger" clubs. This will help attract young players, knowing that we will play them if they are good enough and we wil let them move to "bigger" clubs. To get this to work you need to keep adding to the pipeline of talent.

Look at Ajax - this summer they have sold DeBeek to Man Utd,
a left centre back to Lille and they are in the process if not already completed of selling the RB to Barcelona.

BTW. if players want the move to a "bigger" club then go out there and earn by playing very well.
