Walking the gangplank: Premier League wins court order to shut down pirates
27th July 2017 pirate flag

July 27 – The English Premier League has been awarded a High Court order for the forthcoming season which it hopes will combat illegal streaming by fans watching their teams for free. The blocking order will require UK Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to prevent supporters from illegal access through services like Kodi.

The move comes amid an ongoing crackdown by the Premier League to eradicate pirate broadcasts of live matches.

Whilst it may not be sufficient to prevent pubs and private clubs from showing games using devices that pick up overseas live broadcasts, it will mean individual server addresses being prevented from streaming Premier League content.

A similar Order was obtained for the final two months of the 2016/17 season and was highly effective, with more than 5,000 server IP addresses blocked that had previously been streaming illegal Premier League content.

“This blocking Order is a game-changer in our efforts to tackle the supply and use of illicit streams of our content,” said Premier League director of legal services, Kevin Plumb. “It will allow us to quickly and effectively block and disrupt the illegal broadcast of Premier League football via any means, including so called ‘pre-loaded Kodi boxes’.”

“The protection of our copyright, and the investment made by our broadcast partners, is hugely important to the Premier League and the future health of English football. The ability that clubs have to develop and acquire talented players, to build and improve stadiums, and to support communities and schools is all predicated on being able to market, sell and protect commercial rights. We are pleased the Courts have recognised this with the granting of this significant blocking Order,” he added.

More than a third of Premier League fans watch live matches on illegal internet streams once a month, according to a BBC survey.

Kieron Sharp, director general of the Federation against Copyright Theft (Fact), said a ruling in April by the European Court of Justice made the law on streaming paid-for content clear.

“People need to be aware that this is no longer a grey area, in fact it is very black and white,” Sharp told Sky. “If you are accessing content for free such as sport, TV and films for which you’d normally need a subscription, or go to the cinema, or buy a DVD, this is illegal.

As the old saying goes, if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is.”

The days of watching the Saturday 3pm kick off's look as though they are over :26: Other than that I subscribe to Sky and BT and so if we're playing other than 3pm's then selfishly i'm covered.

This is a disgrace I for one would happily pay for a legal streaming site showing games that are not covered by Sky or BT, as there is no other way I can watch my team. I am lucky enough to be able to afford it. What about all the fans who can't? What about the fans who can't get to games for various reasons? The game has been taken over by the likes of Sky and BT and the true fan has been lock out. Teams spending obscene amounts of money buying and selling players, the same players being paid ridiculous wages. If the clubs streamed the games to their members I am sure it would make no difference to attendance to games.

For games not covered by sky or bt I listen to commentary on radio London on line. It's not the same but you get good insight and info .

The Premier League have been awarded a new High Court order blocking the delivery of 'streams' of live league games for the season of 2017/18.

Only if Sky or BT are showing the game. On another point but a similar subject I have just tried to subscribe to Premier Sports so I can record the Man City game tonight vis my Sky Sports account and on two attempts each time using a different credit card it has failed to go through saying payment denied

It's theft. Plain and simple.

What Sky and BT charge is THEFT...thats why the money they are injecting into the game is now obscene with player prices absolutely ludicrous....we are paying for all this greed!

You can argue about the price but is is still theft.

The fact that a third of people who watch the games stream the, should tell Sky and BT that their pricing model is broken.

the stream site is doing the thieving 80...those watching it are just taking advantage of the fact that it is being shown.....they may be abetting I agree...but its a gift horse for us fans is it not!

It's theft on any level. Whether it be music, video, or sports, people invested money to get a return. It's no different than stealing from any other business.

Is it over priced? Yes.

Is the distribution a naffing mess? Yes.

Do I like the way they deliver Spurs games to me? NO!

But it is still theft.

Let's face it, it's not often we can enjoy watching illicit streams. Once you get rid of all the adverts, viruses, interruptions to the stream etc etc, it's hard work usually, trying to watch the game.

I bought in SKY, THEN, Grrrrr, BT were sold some of the rights. DID I BUY IN BT? Hell no!
My son has BT and gets it on his PC so I watch it on that when I can but it too is ropey and not a very good stream sometimes.

I wish the government/FA would sell all the football to the highest bidder and just have that one as The Football Channel. END OF. I would subscribe to that. SO it would cost a bit more than current SKY or BT but at least we would get the games. We need to be able to get ALL the games. Not just some. AND WHY NOT sell just the games of the team you support as an option in the TV Sports Package?

Football is a big deal for the British. All cities and towns have teams and it has a huge following but a huge amount of people can't watch their teams because they cant get there often, like me, I think all football fans should demonstrate on a given day, show the government how they feel, threaten to withdraw their license fees etc and see how the government and FA react to that. LET'S GET SOME SENSE SPOKEN ABOUT IT.

The way marketing rights are packaged and currently sold were brought about to stay within EU European competition rules - as of now, they can't be changed.

From stats that I was presented with yesterday it seems the key issue for illegal streaming is one where the FA/PL will not allow broadcasting of live PL games that are not specifically excluded by a different kick off time....

So called 'internet' rights are due in the next bid package, but streaming of live games that are not one-off kick of times i.e. the midday and post afternoon match ones, will not be allowed or included.

If it were, the thinking is it would help kill live match attendances and would kill of the audiences for the highlight programs.

I tend to agree.

The only reason why it would affect match attendances is because ticket prices are inflated due to the monopoly on the market, people who like football have no choice but to attend and so push up demand/prices. Their only alternative is to break the law.

I (and likely many others) who don't live in England but inexplicably still can't watch 3pm football, and thereby most of the games. If the tickets were cheaper I, like many others, would certainly attend.

Illegal streaming being theft isn't the issue, the problem is the packaging of the product is becoming increasingly outdated in the current world.

Provide a reasonably tailored service and people will pay.
