What was that penalty all about? There was no grappling, no foul, nothing, just two players tamely jostling.

The one against Sterling, it's just nonsense. The one against Shawcross was fair enough, Otter's run was impeded and the ref can't see the handful of Shawcross' shirt that Otter had so I get why it was given but can't for the life of me understand how he gave that one for Stoke.

He made no attempt to play the ball (wasn't even looking at it) and at one point had his hand on the Stoke players throat. As i understand it, the new directive specifically mentions players attempting to impede whilst not looking at the ball, so i suppose it was given for that. Was soft, but if it is consistently applied across the season then no problem for me :048:

Spot on C, we see Shawcross push Sterling away, but he was watching the ball, while Sterling was pushing his opponent and not looking at the ball.

As they said it is ok as long as it us consistent.

It certainly stopped the pushing and shoving after the Sterling decision

Consistency is always the problem with these 'directives'. They start off with good intentions, then, just like the players, slip back into their old ways after a few games. We just have to hope we don't suffer unduly whilst it's being enforced, compared to when it relapses :028:

I totally agree C. In todays matches the only penalties were at the Stoke - City game and you can't tell me there was no pushing and shoving in any of the other games.

I haven't seen the game but your point is absolutely spot on Buzz. Given the level of contact that goes on in every PL game within the penalty area at corners for there to be no other penalties given is a puzzle.

My only comment would be - was there an earlier penalty claim against Kolarov that was not given? If so, then my suspicion is that the award against Sterling was the 'leveller' - the referee, aware he has missed an earlier decision, finds a way of making up for it. Often happens when they realise they have given a corner when it should have been a goal kick and then blows for a foul by an attacker as soon as the corner is taken.

We didn't play that well, but it is getting there. The most curious decision by Mr Dean was when Zaba got creamed by Outyoubitch and he gave the free against Zaba (2nd half) I hope they show it on the box later

And I would like to point out that the media seem to be wetting themselves that Ibrahimovic has scored three goals for the rags. Nolito has done the same for City. Don't expect they're making too much of that fact.

Fair enough, it'll be interesting to see how Chris Smalling copes with this new directive.
Smalling will not be the only other CB in trouble. Terry has based his career on dirty play, but the real question is why does Sterling pick up Shawcross. Understood we zonal mark, but Shawcross is a big boy, where was Kol, or Stones.

As we play zonal, no-one should have been 'picking up' Shawcross. It looked to me that Raheem thought he should just try to do something to help the defence. Stones and Kolarov were 'in their zones' man :006:
